1964 KLIF album
There is absolutely no explaining what happened in the newsroom at radio station KLIF in Dallas on November 22, 1963. When it all began to break at 12:30, everything went wrong. It was a veteran news staff which tragically fell apart.
Desk editor Roy Nichols, on his radio telephone, could not locate Managing Editor Joe Long, who was hopelessly trapped in a traffic jam; ace reporter Gary DeLaune was unable to reach a telephone at Police Headquarters; a former managing editor, Dave Muhlstein, could not be found; the Program Director was somewhere at lunch, and two other reporters were elsewhere. To complete the shambles, Gordon McLendon was unable to get through jammed KLIF lines from his assigned station at the site of President Kennedy's speech at the Trade Mart.
But great teams somehow mesh, and this team did- magically and immediately. Within three minutes, KLIF was the only independent radio station in the world reporting directly from the scene with the news events of the century. From Portland to Buffalo, other radio stations joined KLIF's broadcast with (and without) permission, but always with astonishment.
Portions of the 27 hours of brilliant broadcasting by this veteran KLIF news staff are on this long-play album. Rushed out in the early part of 1964, this souvenir album of those fateful hours was a short-lived yet vivid reminder of what it was like in Dallas that day. Where many of the Kennedy assassination albums contain the same content over and over and over again in different packages, this album's content is unique, and cannot be found elsewhere.
