Brief Info: Issued after the two one title ‘progressive’ albums, Thick as a Brick and the critically reviled Passion Play, this album went back to a more conventional format of ten shorter, more varied songs, probably hoping to win back fans, and I think it worked perfectly. Passion Play did not sell well in the UK and almost caused the band to split. This is a terrific album and this is a lovely copy and remains one of my favourites within their very impressive catalogue.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with matt smooth surfaces. Made in England by Shorewood and includes the card lyric inner sleeve.

Cover Front and Back: Both sides very clean indeed and retaining genuine freshness. A small few ultra fine and faint edge hairlines, tiny tip rub and a very gentle and light price sticker shadow mark near the top front right. NO pulling, tear or surface disturbance, purely an ultra faint dull. Front and back both very impresisve with rich deep colour retained, this will not prove easy to find much better.

Top Edge: Very straight and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Same again up to the right corner tip that has a very small rub.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Immaculately crisp and sharp with barely even a hint of wear. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Pristiner: solid, straight and with no compression. All text is perfect and unworn, sharp and clear. This is as good as it left the factory.

Corners: A very small tip rub on the bottom right but little else, excellent to near mint shape retained.

Cover Summary: An impresisve all-round example of this dynamic-looking 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This strong example will please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: MINT(-): an unlined hard card lyric inner with no creases and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This close to factory-fresh with just the odd tiny tip rub or very faint handling trace. Being matt black and revealing, this takes no prisoners, but this will prove near impossible to find better. The top opening is recessed and razor-sharp, also barely even a hint of record impression as the original owner put the record directly into a soft replacement inner, thus this inner sleeve is almost like new.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and mainly faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Any minor friction blemishes purely superficial and the hard card inners never are surface friendly. Yes, this one was not kept inside this one very long, but records were quickly rammed into them in manufacture and could also move in distribution, thus so many records that came with them often have a few minor surface blemishes (or worse). Indeed I clearly remember back to the 70s when certain brand new albums were visibly scuffed from these things. Just getting the angle wrong when carelessly insert a record into a hard card inner, and the damage done, it must have happened regularly in the factories. Anyway, this lovely record has very little to fault visually and looks very impressive indeed.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely early-pressed record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This album is beautifully recorded and produced with high detail from the multi-instruments used. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The odd faint tick near the spoken end of side one is immensely difficult to avoid totally. I have not always found this record this quietly pressed, this, and other similar-era Jethro Tull albums could be noisy, but this was a delight. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, possibly less-lauded than it should be, I have always been a big fan of this one since buying it myself in my college days. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
