As a return to standard-length songs following two epic-length pieces (Thick As a Brick and A Passion Play), it was inevitable that the material on War Child would lack power. The music was no longer quite able to cover for the obscurity of Tull's lyrics: The title track is reasonably successful, but "Queen and Country" seems repetitive and pointless. "Ladies," by contrast, is one of Tull's folk-based pieces, and one of the prettiest songs on the record, beautifully sung and benefiting from some of Anderson's best flute playing to date. The band is very tight but doesn't get to really show its stuff until "Back-Door Angels," after which the album picks up: "Sealion" is one of Anderson's pseudo-philosophical musings on life, mixing full-out electric playing and restrained orchestral backing, while "Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day" is a beautiful, largely acoustic number that was popular in concert. "Bungle in the Jungle," with a title that went over well, got most of the radio play.

Quadraphonic recordings of the early 70's may have died an ignoble death because of their hopeless incompatibility with the existing stereo and mono equipment (they can be played on stereo equipment, but not to the full effect) yet, they live on in the hearts of the collectors, and for good reason: some of the finest audiophile recordings ever made - whether rock, soul or classical, were released on some of these, little known and poorly advertised, albums. And, what a gorgeous presentation these recordings are: Sheets of surround-sounds, cascades of orchestration ranging from pianissimo to crescendo, textures which do not exist in any audio- or virtual space and channel separation that is truly a jaw-dropping experience.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          Quad pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. The mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and in some instances (we cannot guarantee) the mixes may be somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber quad by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(c)           The record comes in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam and spine.

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)
