Label/Format: Island with the seldom-seen second black block format with matt textured surfaces. A label only relatively briefly available in 1969, quickly replaced by the more familiar pink ‘i’ version from 1970.

Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with any blemishes or spindle marks few and faint. Evidence suggests this scarce version of this classic has been played very little.

Up and Down Movement: A gentle trace. Few vintage records will ever be perfectly flat, any issues with significant movement or tracking will be mentioned in detail if applicable.

Weight of this Record: 166 grams. These very early Pye-pressed Island records were always heavily pressed.

Rarity: This album rightly proved successful and was pressed on many different label formats, mostly on various pink Island designs from the this first pink eyeball label to the pink rims and beyond. This second major format change copy is arguably the most elusive as it was limited to just a few brief months in 1969.

Brief Info: Within the genre of ‘classic’ rock, there are few better albums than this second Jethro Tull set. Everything about this album is perfect – great songs, sublime packaging, fantastic production and performance – no collection should not include a copy of ‘Stand Up’. Following the brilliant debut album, Mick Abrahams departed for form Blodwyn Pig, this was never going to be easy, but the band rose to even greater heights. Beautifully packaged with it’s ‘working’ pop-up woodcut design cover, the details on the front are little short of remarkable as I hope my pictures show. Musically, for me anyway, this is Jethro Tull’s best ever album, not a second of wasted time, every track is sublime and beautifully recorded too. Blending heavy and mellow songs with gorgeous instrumentation including strings, the details hidden within these vintage grooves are never-ending. This heavily pressed black block copy appears lightly played and is generally well pressed with very fine sound. Any surface sounds minimal and light – that so often not the case on these early pressings – my play-grade was a joy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (with a small name on back), an unlaminated gatefold format with the original ‘pop-up’ cut-out feature inside (this detail part beautiful and little short of as made). The surfaces are matt and smooth, the front with the beautiful yellow hue that really brings out the details of the woodcut graphic. Printed and made in England, uncredited with the ILPS 9103 catalogue number and Chrysalis logo. Includes the polylined Pye-style early inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The beautiful woodcut and incredibly detailed graphic still looks fresh and impressive with little to fault bar the odd tiny corner or edge rub, and how many will avoid that as the barest minimum? Any marks few or crease traces few, very fine and faint.

Cover Back: An uncompromising back that usually suffers often heavy grubbiness or ugly ring wear. This has a small name near the top right corner (‘Mac), any grubbiness light with any rim impression gentle and fine. Avoiding this totally with such a thick heavy record inside for 50 years is near impossible. So just enough to politely remind its around half-a-century old.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, little short of immaculate. The pop-up feature is pristine, it folds up and down perfectly and is crisp, uncreased or thickened. The securing white flaps unloosened and neat. This fragile working part will seldom be seen better on this original cover, it has never come unstuck or been ‘repaired’.

Top Edges: Very straight, flat and flush, any rubbing little, light and very patchy.

Bottom Edges: Similar again – slightly more rubbing on the dark front mostly near the ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both close and open ends are neat and crisp with minimal traces of any thickening.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with hardly any hint of compression. Gently darkened with just the odd small clip to the text as seen. With many of these seen tatty and threadbare, this one remains impressive.

Corners: Light tip rubs with very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: One or rock’s classic covers, and here seen to high advantage on this early-made copy with only gentle hint of age. One to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the polylined inner sleeve has light corner creases, the paper only gently discoloured. Both circles crisp and neat, two tiny nicks were repaired by myselt to stop them catching and tearing, they hardly register. The lining still very clear and fresh. All edges unsplit with no repairs on any. This is UK patented with 1,072,844 number detail, also ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text, this line a little faded in places.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very thick and heavyweight record typical for Pye pressings at this time. Any surface marks few, light and faint with no penetrating stylus scratches. Evidence suggests few and mostly careful plays. A lovely vintage record to please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I always relish the opportunity to play any early copy of this rock masterpiece, and it failed to disappoint. This classic album msotly plays above its fine visual grading with little to fault. It offers strong audio with a lovely detailed production and the genuine full-on sound. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range – a real hi-fi recording and still is a pleasure to listen too. Any surface sounds or blemishes few and light with effortless tracking*, this deep groove heavy record proved very enjoyable for me. The early Jethro Tull line-up were truly inspired on this set and clearly the band themselves were delighted with it, as stated on the cover. Beautifully recorded and produced with incredible instrumentation and Anderson rarely sounding better. This rarer Island format label ‘second’ issue – still from 1969 – albeit only briefly, could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended – a very rare opportunity for fans and label collectors – these are seldom seen.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
