ORIGINAL UK MCA (MKPS 2011/12) FIRST PRESSING (October 1970 ) OF THE PREMIER RECORDING OF JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: A ROCK OPERA - WITH DEEP PURPLE'S IAN GILLAN TAKING ON THE TITLE ROLE

This original recording (released before the show was ever staged) has a rock flavour that is very different from Webber's later work. This is due in part to the emotive singing of Murray Head and Ian Gillan and the playing of well-known rock session musicians such as guitarists Neil Hubbard and Chris Spedding, bassist Alan Spenner and drummer Bruce Rowland. The musical arrangements are often multi-layered, featuring rock and classical elements, and contain many abruptly shifting dynamics and time signatures. In many ways this is the definitive version of the work

THE LABEL SPINDLES INDICATE THIS COPY HAS HAD QUITE A NUMBER OF PLAYS BUT IT HAS ALSO BEEN EXTREMELY WELL CARED FOR AS THE VINYL SURFACES ARE PRACTICALLY UNMARKED AND THE AUDIO DELIVERY IS SENSATIONAL THROUGHOUT - INCREDIBLY CLEAN, BRIGHT AND FRESH SOUND WITH THE IMMEDIACY ONLY EVER FOUND ON VINYL - NOT SURPRISING AS THE SET WAS CUT BY DECCA WHO PRODUCED SOME OF THE FINEST SOUNDING RECORDS OF THE PERIOD

UK FIRST ISSUE CRITERIA:
* BOTH LPs ARE PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL (very thick and chunky) WHICH DELIVER THE SENSATIONAL LOUD, BRIGHT, RICH AND WARM AUDIO
* FIRST ISSUE (SMALL) MCA TWO-COLOUR 'BOW-TIE' LABELS (this copy has the interesting variation of having record one pressed with the blue/black label and record two with the red/brown label and I have no reason to believe the original owner 'swapped' the records so I believe this is how the set was purchased)
* FIRST ISSUE MATRICES: 7 - 214 - 2 / 7 - 215 (record one) and 7 - 216 - 2 / 7 - 217 (record two)
* FIRST 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 MOTHERS ON ALL FOUR SIDES (with etched 'JT' tax code)
* MATT GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed in England by Robert Stace" (there were a number of first issue variations for this sleeve - this being the most common but there is also an outer laminated version and an extremely rare fold-out star shaped sleeve)
* LARGE FORMAT 12 PAGE BOOKLET WITH PHOTOS AND LYRICS - DATED OCTOBER 1970
* TWO ORIGINAL DECCA BLUE STEREO POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVES

THIS IS A GREAT COPY OF AN ICONIC PIECE OF WORK - ONE OF TIM RICE AND ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S EARLIEST PIECES AND EASILY THEIR FINEST - FINDING ALL THE LEADS IN TREMENDOUS FORM AND WITH IAN GILLAN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING IN THE TITLE ROLE - VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

LABELS: The labels are clean and bright with the aforementioned spindle marks - this set has been well played but also very well cared for
VINYL Visual: All surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked (there are light sleeve-removal hairlines but these have no real audio consequence)
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio delivery in every respect - crystal clear, deep, rich and vibrant - sounds absolutely stunning. On playback at a loud volume there are no scratches, no sticks/jumps, just 6 consecutive clicks on "Gethsemane" only (overall, pretty minor and there are no other prominent clicks on the whole set). This is an incredibly impressive recording which plays throughout to an extremely high standard with great clarity, no discernible groove-wear and no distortion and apart from those few clicks is critically graded EXCELLENT+ for audio
SLEEVE: The matt gatefold cover is in EXCELLENT condition. The colours are fresh and vibrant and the surfaces have no rubbing or ring wear, just some record impression. The top spine corner has a light crease but all the edges are sharp and fresh with very little storage wear and the thick spine displays all text clear and bold - overall, a very fine example of this very easily worn untreated gatefold cover
BOOKLET: The original large format 12 page booklet - dated October 1970, "Printed in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd.” - is also in EXCELLENT condition. All pages are clean and unmarked with just some handling
