Description
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR w/ IAN GILLAN (DEEP PURPLE) 1970
UK MCA 1st PRESS, MATT R. STACE GF w/BOOK, SUPERB SOUND
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
A Rock Opera
ORIGINAL UK MCA (MKPS 2011/12) FIRST PRESSING (October 1970) OF THE PREMIER RECORDING OF JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: A ROCK OPERA - WITH DEEP PURPLE'S IAN GILLAN TAKING ON THE TITLE ROLE - A STUNNING PIECE OF WORK
This original recording (released before the show was ever staged) has a rock flavour that is very different from Webber's later work. This is due in part to the emotive singing of Murray Head and Ian Gillan and the playing of well-known rock session musicians such as guitarists Neil Hubbard and Chris Spedding, bassist Alan Spenner and drummer Bruce Rowland.
The musical arrangements are often multi-layered, featuring rock and classical elements, and contain many abruptly shifting dynamics and time signatures. In many ways this is the definitive version of the work
EVEN THOUGHT THIS COPY HAS SEEN SOME USE IT PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY THROUGHOUT WITH LITTLE TO FAULT AND SOUNDS GREAT - SENSATIONAL AUDIO DELIVERY WITH AN INCREDIBLY CLEAN, BRIGHT AND FRESH SOUND - NOT SURPRISING AS THE SET WAS CUT BY DECCA WHO PRODUCED SOME OF THE FINEST SOUNDING RECORDS OF THE PERIOD
UK FIRST ISSUE CRITERIA:
* BOTH LPs ARE PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL
* FIRST ISSUE (SMALL) MCA TWO-COLOUR 'BOW-TIE' LABELS (this copy has the less common red/brown colour variant)
* FIRST ISSUE MATRICES: 7 - 214 - 2 / 7 - 215 (record one) and 7 - 216 - 2 / 7 - 217 (record two)
* FIRST 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 MOTHERS ON ALL FOUR SIDES (with etched 'JT' tax code etched in the 12 o'clock position on both records)
* GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed in England by Robert Stace" (there were a number of first issue variations for this sleeve - the fully matt variant being the most common but there is also a limited outer laminated version and an extremely rare fold-out star shaped sleeve)
* LARGE FORMAT 12 PAGE BOOKLET WITH PHOTOS AND LYRICS - DATED OCTOBER 1970
* TWO ORIGINAL DECCA BLUE STEREO POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVES
THIS IS A GREAT COPY OF AN ICONIC PIECE OF WORK - ONE OF TIM RICE AND ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S EARLIEST PIECES AND EASILY THEIR FINEST - FINDING ALL THE LEADS IN TREMENDOUS FORM AND WITH IAN GILLAN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING IN THE TITLE ROLE - VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

LABELS: The labels are clean and bright and unmarked with moderate spindles - played but no over-played and very well cared for - EXCELLENT+
VINYL Visual: All surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen with just some hairlines and superficial light marks in keeping with it's played status - these have no real audio consequence - the whole set plays beautifully throughout (much better than many lesser played copies I have seen) - EXCELLENT
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio delivery in every respect - crystal clear, deep, rich and vibrant - sounds absolutely stunning. On playback at a loud volume (and it's always a real pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no real audio issues of note at all - no scratches, no sticks/jumps, no surface noise and no loud clicks or pops - this is a very, very clean pressing. An incredibly impressive recording, beautifully engineered by Decca, it plays throughout to a very high standard with great clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion and is critically graded EXCELLENT++ for audio (if not better) - pretty much flawless and a great copy of this tremendous piece of work - very highly recommended indeed
SLEEVE: The matt gatefold cover is in VERY GOOD++ condition. The colours are fresh and vibrant with some ring and record impression on the back, but a nice fresh front and the inside is clean and unmarked. There is some storage rubbing to the edges and spine but nothing too major - all the spine text is still clear and bold. Overall, a very presentable example of the incredibly easily worn, untreated sleeve
BOOKLET: The original large format 12 page booklet - dated October 1970, "Printed in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd.” - is EXCELLENT with all pages clean and unmarked and just some handling creases from being thumbed through
DECCA INNERS: Both of the original inners are in very nice condition with no splits - just some age-related discolouration - EXCELLENT
