JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR w/ IAN GILLAN (DEEP PURPLE) 1970

UK MCA 1st PRESS, MATT R. STACE GF w/BOOK, LIGHT PLAY

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
A Rock Opera

ORIGINAL UK MCA (MKPS 2011/12) FIRST PRESSING (October 1970 )
OF THE PREMIER RECORDING OF JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: A ROCK OPERA - WITH DEEP PURPLE'S IAN GILLAN TAKING ON THE TITLE ROLE - GREAT COPY OF A SENSATIONAL PIECE OF WORK - SEEN LITTLE PLAY

This original recording (released before the show was ever staged) has a rock flavour that is very different from Webber's later work. This is due in part to the emotive singing of Murray Head and Ian Gillan and the playing of well-known rock session musicians such as guitarists Neil Hubbard and Chris Spedding, bassist Alan Spenner and drummer Bruce Rowland. The musical arrangements are often multi-layered, featuring rock and classical elements, and contain many abruptly shifting dynamics and time signatures. In many ways this is the definitive version of the work

AND THIS COPY IS IN SUPERB, BARELY PLAYED CONDITION WITH HARDLY A SPINDLE MARK ON ANY OF THE LABELS AND CLEAN, BRIGHT, PRACTICALLY UNMARKED VINYL SURFACES AND SENSATIONAL AUDIO DELIVERY THROUGHOUT - INCREDIBLY CLEAN, BRIGHT AND FRESH SOUND WITH THE IMMEDIACY ONLY EVER FOUND ON VINYL - NOT SURPRISING AS THE SET WAS CUT BY DECCA WHO PRODUCED SOME OF THE FINEST SOUNDING RECORDS OF THE PERIOD - FANTASTIC COPY

UK FIRST ISSUE CRITERIA:
* BOTH LPs ARE PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL (very thick and chunky) WHICH DELIVER THE SENSATIONAL LOUD, BRIGHT, RICH AND WARM AUDIO
* FIRST ISSUE (SMALL) MCA TWO-COLOUR 'BOW-TIE' LABELS (this copy has the less common pink/red colour variant)
* FIRST ISSUE MATRICES: 7 - 214 - 2 / 7 - 215 (record one) & 7 - 216 - 2 / 7 - 217 (record two)
* FIRST 1 / 1 / 1 / 1 MOTHERS ON ALL FOUR SIDES (with etched 'JT' tax code etched in the 6 o'clock position - on all four sides)
* GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed in England by Robert Stace" (there were a number of first issue variations for this sleeve - the fully matt variant being the most common but there is also a limited outer laminated version and an extremely rare fold-out star shaped sleeve)
* LARGE FORMAT 12 PAGE BOOKLET WITH PHOTOS AND LYRICS - DATED OCTOBER 1970
* TWO ORIGINAL DECCA BLUE STEREO POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVES

THIS IS A GREAT COPY OF AN ICONIC PIECE OF WORK - ONE OF TIM RICE AND ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S EARLIEST PIECES AND EASILY THEIR FINEST - FINDING ALL THE LEADS IN TREMENDOUS FORM AND WITH IAN GILLAN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING IN THE TITLE ROLE - VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

SIDE 2: Hosanna / Simon Zealotes-Poor Jerusalem / Pilate’s Dream / The Temple / Everything’s Alright / I Don’t Know How To Love Him / Damned For All Time-Blood Money
SIDE 3: The Last Supper / Gethsemane (I Only Want To Say) / The Arrest / Peter’s Denial / Pilate And Christ / King Herod’s Song
SIDE 4: Judas’ Death / Trial Before Pilate (including the 39 lashes) / Superstar / Crucifixion / John Nineteen: Forty-One

LABELS: The labels are clean and bright and unmarked with hardly a spindle trace to be seen - this copy has seen little play - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: All surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked (there are light sleeve-removal hairlines but these have no real audio consequence) - two beautiful records - NEAR MINT
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio delivery in every respect - crystal clear, deep, rich and vibrant - sounds absolutely stunning. On playback at a loud volume (and it's always a real pleasure to return to this wonderful LP) there are no scratches, no sticks/jumps, barely any surface noise and no loud clicks or pops - this is a beautifully clean pressing. An incredibly impressive recording, beautifully engineered by Decca (who produced some of the finest sounding records of the period) and it plays throughout to just about the highest possible standard with great clarity, no groove-wear and no distortion (its seen little play) and is very critically graded NEAR MINT for audio - practically flawless - great copy of this tremendous piece of work - very highly recommended indeed
SLEEVE: The matt gatefold cover is in VERY GOOD++ condition. The colours are fresh and vibrant with some ring and record impression on the back, but a nice fresh front and the inside is clean and unmarked. There is some storage rubbing to the edges and spine but nothing too major - the spine text is still mostly clear. Overall, a very presentable example of the incredibly easily worn untreated sleeve
BOOKLET: The original large format 12 page booklet - dated October 1970, "Printed in England by Moore & Matthes Ltd.” - is EXCELLENT with all pages clean and unmarked and just a couple of light 'foxing' spots
DECCA INNERS: These are of the slightly older design which was discontinued in 1970 - one is date coded '3-70' (Mach, 1970), the other is undated and both are in unsplit EXCELLENT condition
