This is a first pressing of Jesus Christ Superstar. Not only does this feature Ian Gillan of Deep Purple in the title role, but with members of Juicy Lucy and Spooky Tooth (among others) providing the backing, this original recording has a prog/rock feel which is far superior to all subsequent versions.

This is the incrediby rare, earliest first pressing, of which only a few hundred copies were made. It has the unique fold-out star cover and the late-sixties style MCA labels with the orange/yellow swirl design.

You should not under-estimate the rarity of this item. The album's official release date was 16th October 1970 by which time MCA had introduced the new 'bow-tie' label design. Copies of the fold-out star cover are almost never offered for sale and the few copies which I have seen have all had the later 'bow-tie' labels.

Even the booklet is slightly different from later copies - it is printed on shiny paper and has rounded corners.

The vinyl has the following first matrix numbers, first mothers and really early stampers (1st, 3rd, 3rd, ?).

Detailed description
Vinyl: The vinyl doesn't seem to have been played that much. Disk one has no obvious marks in the playing surfaces. Disk two shows minimal marks on side three and several surface marks on side four including a couple of long hairlines. Despite having no obvious physical marks, disk one, and in particular side two, has noticeable patterning on the surface caused by the poly-lined inner sleeve. Most collectors will be familiar with this effect which sometimes occurs when vinyl is left undisturbed for many years in a poly-lined inner. Side two has this 'marbling' effect from prolonged contact with the poly-lined inner sleeve where it has sat untouched for probably about forty years! I have played all four sides all the way through and found that, for the most part, the vinyl plays perfectly and was enjoyable to listen to.
Side 1 has one random click and just soft background noise in the quiet parts, fades, silent grooves and intros. I would play grade side one as easily Excellent (Ex).
Side 2 has more background noise than side one (probably caused by the 'marbling' and therfore it may be possible to reduce this through cleaning and/or playing the record a few times). It did not notice any clicks on side two, but the background noise was more prominent, especially in the quiet parts (although it wasn't noticeable at all in the loud songs such as 'Damned for all time'). I would play grade side two as Very Good (VG).
Side 3 has soft background noise in the quiet parts, fades, silent grooves and intros and a handful of very quiet clicks. It would play grade between Very Good plus (VG+) and Excellent minus (Ex-) except that there was a single-groove skip during the 'jaded mandarin' section of 'The Last Supper'
Side 4 has some background noise in the quiet parts, fades, silent grooves and intros and an intermittent soft click (very quiet, only intermittently audible and mainly only in the left channel) during the quiet parts of 'Judas' Death' and 'Trial before Pilate', but it is very quiet and not intrusive in any way. I would play grade side four around Very Good (VG) or Very Good Plus (VG+).
Labels: All four labels look great with no damage, writing, stickers etc, just some minor marks and light spindle trails.
Sleeve: The unique sleeve - which is an envelope which folds out to a star - shows some prominent wear to the spines and corners but is otherwise intact and complete with no tears or parts missing. The outside of the sleeve is unlaminated and this, combined with the design, means that some wear is inevitable. This one has prominent wear to all four spines/edges - on the left spine, most of the printed surface has worn away, about a quarter of it on the right spine, and patchy edge wear to the top and bottom. The good news is that this wear is the only significant issue affecting the cover - there is no writing, splits, tears or stickers etc and no missing pieces, including all four points of the star still attached and complete. There are just some creases to the flaps of the envelope and some minor wear and a few dents, marks and scuffs.
Inner sleeve: The original blue Decca poly-lined inners have various creases etc but are fully intact and perfectly useable. [Note that the date codes on these sleeves are 6/70 and 7/70 which precedes the official release date by several months.].
Booklet: This is the original first press booklet which has much shinier paper than later issues and rounded corners. This copy is complete and intact but it has lots of signs of age and use. It is grubby (especially on the outer cover), has been folded in half, has some damage to some pages (where it looks like it has got wet) and has various marking-ups and deletions to the lyrics, although everything is still readable. Please see 'Other information', below.

Detracting features not covered above:  None. This is a very rare item. It is not perfect, but is complete and intact and the records can still be played and enjoyed.

Other information:  It is my belief that this copy may have been used during rehearsals for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar (by an amateur dramatics society for instance). The records do not show much sign of play and appear to have been untouched for many years but the booklet shows lots of signs of handling and use. If it was used during rehearsals this would explain why the booklet appears much more used than the records and explains why it has been marked up in this way. Once the production was done it would have been put away and stored, unused for many years and would helps to explain the extensive edge wear, but relatively unworn and undamaged state of the rest of the cover, and the marbling on side two caused by forty years undisturbed inside the inner sleeve. Please note that this is entirely speculation on behalf of the seller, and is intended to help inform buyers about the condition of this rare item.

Visually-graded vinyl: Unless specifically stated in the listing, vinyl is visually graded.  A visual grading will identify physical flaws (such as scratches) and can help determine whether a record has been cared-for properly. I always do my best to give a fair assessment of any visible marks on the playing surface, but a visual grading will not identify noise or crackle caused by non-visible sources. Most of the records I sell are between thirty and fifty years old and so it is likely that there may be some background noise even if they look perfect. POSTAGE & PACKING

I care about the records I sell and believe that they need to be carefully and securely packaged to ensure that they survive their journey through the post. Vinyl is removed from the sleeve for posting and the contents will be protected with rigid cardboard stiffeners. All packages are labelled "Do not bend" and securely sealed with "FRAGILE" parcel tape.

I support the use of recycled materials and so I may send some items in packaging which has been previously used or which has been made from other cardboard packaging. If you wish your item to be sent in entirely new packaging please let me know before paying for it. Thanks.

P&P charges

I need to cover the cost of postage, packing materials, time and fees but I try not to charge more for packing and posting your item than it actually costs me. I do not view P&P costs as a means of making money.

However, to quote an exact cost for every LP is difficult because of the wide variance in weight (e.g. Abbey Road weighs around 230 grams whereas Led Zeppelin III weighs around 390 grams). But the majority of single LPs, when packed, will weigh around 500-550 grams and I have based my P&P rates on this.

Occasionally, you may end up paying a few pence more than it actually costs me and occasionally you may end up paying a few pence less than it actually costs me. If there is a significant discrepancy in your favour I will refund the difference.

Double LPs will be charged as two LPs, triple LPs will be charged as three LPs. Box sets etc will be charged according to weight.

UK P&P costs

UK Standard service - items are sent quickly and securely using first class recorded post, which includes insurance up to £46. The cost for this is as follows:

 

First LP or 12" = £3.80, each additional LP or 12" add £0.80

First 7" or CD = £1.90, each additional 7" or CD add £0.50


UK Fully insured service - Any order valued over £46 will be sent fully insured using Royal Mail Special Delivery and the total cost of this will be £7.50.  Multiple-item orders weighing more than 1kg or items valued over £500 will cost slightly more to insure, so please wait for my invoice before paying.


UK Economy service - If the value of your order is below £10 you can request a new invoice to have your item sent by standard second class post (unrecorded). However, please be aware that this service can take up to a week to reach you and in the event of a claim for loss or damage, Royal Mail will not reimburse the full value of your order. The cost for this is as follows:

Overseas orders valued over £10 will ONLY be sent fully insured.

 

Insurance is charged at cost as follows:

• Overseas orders valued up to £46 will be insured for an additional £4.95
• Overseas orders valued between £46 and £500 will be insured for an additional £7.45
• Overseas orders valued over £500, please contact me.

Overseas orders weighing more than 2kg or valued over £500 may be split into two or more packages as appropriate so they can be sent using Royal Mail's Small Packet Rate, so please wait for my invoice on larger multiple purchases.
