Description
Jerusalem 1W / 2W 1st Press
This very rare and collectable first pressing on the brown & white Deram label is in superb condition with only a little interference on one track on S2, nothing major though. It plays with exceptional clarity and of course the raw dynamic power of the recording has meant that is now quite rightly viewed as a classic from the early '70s. They were helped in no small measure by it being produced by none other than Ian Gillan.
It is also one of the earliest first pressings as it has a single stamper on each side. In fact S1 has a 'B' stamper which is of course the first Decca stamper.
The laminated cover is also in excellent condition with minor shelf wear and the original stereo inner has also been so well preserved with no side splits. What a stunning 'package'!

Visual grading
For such a rare pressing this vinyl is in superb condition! It has a lovely glossy sheen and judging by the minimal spindle wear and audio quality this has only been played a small number of times. S1 is absolutely stunning! There is just the one hairline but even then does not exactly stand out plus a handful of even small hairlines that are barely visible. It really is a fantastic looking side and it goes without saying there are no marks or scratches. S2 is almost as good with just one slightly more obvious hairline and 3/4 small marks - don't get me wrong it is still a very clean side! It has been so well preserved down the years and the run out grooves and labels are also super clean.
Play grading
From the opening note 'Frustration' plays so well and with very impressive clarity. There are no clicks or pops and no intrusive static either, just the odd mega light dust tick. The first two verses are nigh on perfect and the extended mid instrumental plays with exceptional quality and with such a strong deep sound. You only get clarity like this on a record that has not been overplayed. There is only a minimal amount of light static during the 'quieter' verse near the end and one 'swish' static type sound. However, the music is very clear and the guitars which play such an important factor in the Jerusalem 'sound' play with great power and distinction. The final section provides a sublime example of that. An Ex+ grade is definitely deserved although many sections do play better than that.
'Hooded Eagle' has barely any static on the intro and continues to play with sublime quality. Williams' raucous vocals, again such a distinctive part of the Jerusalem 'sound', are so strong with no distortion. The guitar sections play so well with no obvious static and I cannot quite put into words how superb the audio is here. It deserves to be played loud! The final verse plays without fault, just a little static on the fade out. I honestly think Near Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio. Such a powerful version.
'I See The Light' does have a little more static on the opening verse but it is quiet and non-intrusive in my opinion. The first 'bluesy' guitar piece plays with excellent quality and only light static and as the track progresses there is so much to admire! With only a little background static the audio is very impressive and actually gets better with each passing groove. The final two verses with the accompanying guitar work is absolutely stunning! This power and clarity is prevalent to the end and whilst the first half grades as a very strong Ex the remainder is Near Mint- in my educated opinion.
'Murderer's Lament' plays with 'high end' audio from the very start. There is barely any static and as the 'quieter' vocal begins the playback remains very clear and it continues to play with excellent clarity and only minimal light background static here and there. In no way is it intrusive, it is so quiet and does not intrude on the audio experience. Every verse is of the same quality and this is easily worth an Ex+ grade. 'When The Wolf Sits' plays superbly from the get go with barely any static and as the percussion comes in, closely followed by the first vocal, the audio cannot be faulted. There is no inner groove distortion which is another sign the record has hardly been played. The audio is again so strong and deep, the playback for a final track is fantastic! The mid instrumental is so dynamic and powerful there really are no negatives here. The last two verses play with flawless precision and there are no clicks or pops. A stunning Near Mint finish to the side for certain.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The intro on 'Midnight Steamer' plays extremely well with no obvious static and the first verse is equally is good. As it continues there is the odd dust tick but due to the volume they do not interfere in any way. There are five intermittent clicks during the mid instrumental but again they are not particularly intrusive because the music is so loud! In saying the majority of this section does play with great power and definition and then the remainder of the track is just stunning. There is no further interference and only minimal static on the fade out. A difficult one to grade - perhaps Near Mint- and VG+ for the middle section is about right.
'Primitive Man' has a little static on the quiet intro and then 'rocks out' superbly as the volume increases. Now anyone aware of this classic album will know how loud and powerful this track is! The first two verses play perfectly with no distortion as does the mid instrumental. Wow the playback is outstanding! There is just a hint of light static during the two 'quieter' verses that follow but again this does not interfere with the 'listen', the clarity is still excellent. The last verse is faultless and the final guitar section also plays to near perfection. What a rocker! Ex+ I would say.
'Beyond The Grave' has a little static on the intro for a few seconds and then plays very clearly indeed with only a couple of static ticks at the end of this section. The first verse is very 'clean' considering how quiet it is (rare!) and has only the bare minimum of static. It progresses with superb clarity and precision and the next 'slower' verse has only a little static for company and plays very clearly. The instrumental sections play incredibly well on this track with no intrusion at all and then the final verse has barely any 'background'. There is a lot to like about this track and Ex+ overall is fair but I am confident in saying many sections are even stronger than that.
'She Came Like A Bat From Hell' has only 2/3 static ticks on the intro and the first raucous vocal section is nigh on perfect. It continues in the same way with no interference and what is impressive is how well the 'quieter' mid section plays including the verse. There is barely any static and the raw quality of the music is just phenomenal! To the end you cannot fault the sonic quality on offer here and it plays with such dynamic power. It provides such a strong finish to this classic album and again Ex+ is an honest assessment although that may be under-selling it as the vast majority is better than that.
In summary this very collectable and rare pressing plays to very high standard throughout. This was only pressed in limited numbers hence the rarity and it has become known as a classic debut over the years. The clarity and power of the audio is very impressive and there is only one section with any obvious interference (five clicks on S2) but even then it is somewhat 'hidden' in the music. There is only a minimal amount of very light underlying static here and there and there is no crackle, no pops and no skips or jumps either. I have only sold one of these before and this one is infinitely better than that!
The Gatefold
This famous cover is in excellent condition considering its age and rarity and has clearly been very well looked after down the years. The edges have no wear at all and the spine has only been compressed slightly but is still 100% legible. It has a little wear on the bottom corner but less on the top corner. The right hand corners are very clean with barely any wear and the opening edge of the front cover has only the bare minimum of handling wear. The opening edge of the back cover is pristine, it looks untouched! The laminated front cover has no marking and has just a few creases next to the spine, a common feature with laminated covers. The colours are still strong and vibrant and for such a rare cover it looks very impressive! The back cover is just as good with only a few very small creases around the edges and very minor laminate lift near the top edge. There is another faint crease towards the bottom left. The inside of the gatefold is in immaculate condition with no marking whatsoever. Overall a fine example of this rare cover.
Inner Sleeve
The original blue stereo poly-lined inner is in superb condition with no side splits or marking and only a little creasing.
The Labels
The rare brown Deram labels have no marking or writing and only a little spindle wear. Great examples!
