GRADING : Some people are content without an EXCELLENT rating. That's ok, but we do use G, VG, EX, NM, M, SEALED and variables of + and -
I'm sure VG+++ is the same as EX+.
But it's subjective to the grader's objective.
our grading scale as follows seems very similar to Goldmine magazine
· M/SS : (Mint / Still Sealed) Highest possible grade, still sealed.
· NM : (Near Mint) Record possibly never played, perfect shape, not sealed.
· EX : (Excellent) Visibly clean, minimal surface scuffs, very few audio artifacts (pops, clicks)
· VG : (Very Good) Record definitly used, but taken care of. Minimal crackles and pops, hairline scratches.
· G : (Good) Many visible scuffs, possible scratches and minimal skips. Pronounced crackles and pops in areas.
· P: (Poor) Many hard pops, crackles, skips and or disc damage, warpage, cracks.
**** ALL GRADES MAY HAVE A VARIABLE RANGE OF PLUS to MINUS Grading procedure starts as a natural passion of caring for the volitile manner of vinyl and other analog audio sources. We always manually wash , with our own basic yet most uncompromising methods, inspect a record with the level of a forensic investigator before We lay it down on the platter and play to further delve into the condition of the actual groove formation. When cleaning first (we sometimes have to preview before and we try to be very brief in our Pre-Wash listening) the major benefit is it immediately rules out any damage caused by debris that would be cleaned at washing, or sources out crackle/damage from a possible previous owners worn needle, or a myraid of other dirt/grease/improper cartridge problems. Every record is then played on a Technics 1200 mkII turntable outfitted with an [1.5 gram] audio technica AT150MLX• cartridge, thus every record incorporates both audio and visual aspects when grading.
***NOTE ABOUT CARTRIDGES : if you own a Microline/Shibata type cartrige/stylus, you have the distinct advantage of getting more of out your grooves.As you can see, I own an Audio Technica AT150mlx..and if you don't own a cartridge that eliminates Inner Groove Distortion, then You may be thinking there is something wrong with the sound of a whole lot of your records, or you may be grading them lower than you should. The grading of any record goes up instantly, as these type of carts, follow the full wall of the groove, not just one point, so you are playing more information, with less wear, and getting spots of the groove that was never played, therefore will sound pristine, like a new record in most cases. I recommend These types of carts for anyone interested in getting the most out of their investment. Basically any record will sound as good as it gets with these Cartridges. One very good manufacturer that sells Shibata/microline carts, starting at very reasonable prices, is ~Audio~Technica~
