Label/Format: Grunt – intense coal black with shiny surfaces. Grunt was part of RCA, and like the famous orange label senior label, the early pressings of this album had the glossy, super-smooth finish. Later pressings were wafer thin with matt surfaces. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both immaculate, just as made. Ultra clean and highly attractive and I am struggling to see a single spindle trace. These superb intense black Grunt labels will prove near impossible to find better on a genuine first pressed UK-made copy.

Cat Number: FTR 1007.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. Although not a heavyweight, this record is of exceptional weight for a Grunt record, many of which were so thin, they dipped in the middle when held. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: [UK and US]. Record in England (many seen are US pressings on vastly inferior, wafer-thin vinyl, and this record was often issued on the vinyl substitute, dynaflex). The cover and inner are highly specialised and all made in the United States. These were imported and married-up with the UK-pressed records for sale here. Die-cut and scored card with intricate shapes and recesses had to be made on set-machines and clearly done in one factory to save vast cost. It would have been clear this was never to be a big-seller in the United Kingdom and it proved correct. Although US-made, this has all the characteristics and style of a UK-made cover with the same type of look, feel and card of a typical 70s cover.

Rarity: Genuine UK first pressings with the ultimate -1E / -1E matrixes with thicker pressed real vinyl and shiny labels are far harder to find. This was a poorish seller and non-charter. Another significant factor is the cover: a gimmick sleeve that could be built into a cigar box with folds and tabs. This one is TOTALLY UNBUILT and as made, many of those who purchased this, built the box, hence it never looked quite the same as when first purchased (please see the various cover parts to confirm this, the actual cigars are the inner sleeve and not part of the actual box cover).

Brief Info: This was the final studio album using the name Jefferson Airplane. The band later changed to Starship and Jefferson Starship and became far more commercially successful, if too commercial for my taste. After a host of solo projects by various members, the band got back together for this. Their was clear tension and turmoil in the ranks and the quality suffered accordingly – that said, it does have its moments. Not the greatest of self-productions either, the sound is a little muted and flat, but with this first pressed copy, you get it as good as it ever gets. The cover is a gem, and the choice can be made to build the cigar box containing some somewhat dodgy green-tinged tobacco. It’s fairly unusual to find this cover totally unbuild with unused lugs, unbroken tabs and the push-out parts totally undisturbed or broken. This bar a tiny few wear blemishes to edges or corners, is as purchased and looks fantastic. So not the greatest album to include the legendary Jefferson Airplane name, but a much rarer genuine first pressing with a superb unbuilt cover, and for collectors, this is a huge bonus.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: more rarely seen untampered with and left as manufactured. Complex and fragile, this is a truly exceptional example.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ (at least). A highly complex gimmick cover that is more like one from the Vertigo Spiral range. It’s unlaminated and a double gatefold format with two inside open-out flaps. There are score lines, lugs and tabs and pieces to push-out. All are FULLY INTACT. Printed and made in the USA, clearly a specialised cover that was not manufactured in the UK.

Cover Front: There are a number of faces on this complex and quite intricate cover, so I will try to be brief and mention all parts as they are all important. The front is fantastic and one faint crease and tiny corner rubs apart, is near perfect. The scored line near the bottom and its tab are totally unbroken, every perferation fully infact and unstressed. Clean, fresh and highly attractive.

Cover Back: The back is practically pristine bar tiny corner tip creases and odd tiny rub. Again no folding or ‘use’ at all, no ring marks or creases and almost as clean as when made.

Cover Outside ‘Inner’ Face: This has a scored and perforated panel and includes full instructions to build the box. This is practically as made with no perfs broken or even stressed and is as clean as new.

Cover First Inner Face: This is scored and has a tab, again both unused as new. The picture of the cool guy being uncool by blowing smoke on the girl is pristine. A small crease on the edge of the fragile fold hing that is only single thickness. Minor fraying on the edges if being somewhat critical.

Middle Inner Face & Flaps: The main inner face is little short of perfect with the tobacco artwork pristine. This has two adjoined and highly complex flaps that open out. Both are immaculate as are the four lugs that are unopened, just as made. Also a host of score lines to be folded, none are, all again as made. No wear, creasing or splits to these fragile parts at all. The white underside of the flaps are pristine mint as made.

Cover Inside Bottom Face: Pretty boring this one being just a plain white surface. Faint set-off from the dark tobacco that rests atop, this is near impossible to avoid.

Top Edges: Faint rub and very minor burr traces being critical.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: As above again, the record is stored from the inside.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded very square, all edges align superbly and parallel. Faint rubbing to the hinge folds, again being fairly critical, light rubbing to the ends but the text is fully present with barely any traces of wear.

Corners: The tips have rubbed a little, being only single thickness this is no real surprise, but any wear is modestly small and light.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Purely guessing, but I would suggest a decent percentage of those who bought this actually built the cigar box. To find one not only unassembled but with ALL parts intact and not even folded or any perfs broken is little short of remarkable. Clearly intricate and wonderfully gimmicky, and made in just one specialist company in the United States, this beautiful and unusual item should please most collectors.

The Inner: Mint, no messing around here, this is pristine, exactly as made, again the US. Unlined, clean, fresh with all edges fully intact and not even rubbed or stressed, not a crease to be seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, way heavier than most records on this label. A copy barely even played on all the evidence, any faint surface marks or blemishes almost certainly present from purchase, the thick card insert never surface-friendly. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super-clean Grunt record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is as good as it gets, as stated this is not a hi-fi masterwork with a slightly muted production with limited dynamic range. Still that’s out of my control, this is the way the band produced their own album. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is a really fine clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this ultimate first UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this excellent record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
