'Out-Sider present the first vinyl reissue of Jeffery Liberman's self-titled album, originally released in 1975. Chicago born Jeff Liberman was a guitar player in the best tradition of '70s guitar Gods like Hendrix, Trower, Clapton or Zappa. His music is the perfect mix between virtuosity and feeling, with a gift for brilliant songwriting. Between 1975 and 1978, Liberman self-released three albums on his own Librah label which were some of the first private pressings to gain recognition amongst psych collectors in the '80s. His self-titled first album was released in 1975 and recorded at PSR Studios in Chicago. It is full of heavy psych guitar with plenty of fuzz-wah, phasing, effects, mystical/moody vocals, acid-blues, and mellow folkie tracks with west coast vibes and even some crazy synth/electronic/experimental excursions. "Jeff Liberman is an interesting, complex dude, something this debut full demonstrates. Known primarily for his guitar playing, he has many more colors on his palette, but seems unsure of their merit and priority. The opening track borrows Neil Young's "Out On The Weekend" and turns it into a mid-period Elvis style ballad! Another, equally appealing track sounds like Bob Desper gone electric, right down to the lyrics and vocal style. These were just preludes to the apex of the album - of indeed almost any album -  the 8-minute epic which closes side 1. Presumably still not sure about his vocal style, Liberman whispers heavy aphrodisiac lyrics over late-night psych backing, then via some brilliant guitar effects segues into a long droney jam section that is both original and utterly tranced out. You have to look to the best of D R Hooker to find something as good, and this number alone raises the question why Liberman isn't a private press legend on the same level as the Big Guys. Side 2 finds him mainly exploring the style that has become his trademark; mid-tempo blues-rock with double, sometimes triple-tracked feedback and wah-wah guitar leads. It's more attractive than you may think, simply because Liberman (unlike many guitar heroes) is more interested in creating moods and odd mergers than showing off his technique. The second album (for which the power trio setting here was expanded to a quartet) may be his most concentrated effort, but for the average private press collector, the debut could well top it.
