When it was originally released the Jeff Beck Group's second album, featured a famous sleeve note on its back cover:
"Today, with all the hard competition in the music business, it's almost impossible to come up with anything totally original. So we haven't. However, this disc was made with the accent on heavy music. So sit back and listen and try and decide if you can find a small place in your heads for it."
Beck was reacting to the success of peers and competitors like Cream and Led Zeppelin, bands that had been all over the charts with a hard rock sound soon to be dubbed heavy metal, and indeed, his sound employs much the same brand of "heavy music" as theirs, with deliberate rhythms anchoring the beat, over which the guitar solos fiercely and the lead singer emotes.
The album is heightened by the distinctive vocals of Rod Stewart, and Beck-Ola easily could have been the album to establish the Jeff Beck Group as the equal of the other heavy bands of the day.
Unfortunately, a series of misfortunes occurred.
Beck canceled out of a scheduled appearance at Woodstock; he was in a car accident that sidelined him for over a year; and Stewart and bass player Ron Wood decamped to join Faces, breaking up the group.
Nevertheless, Beck-Ola stands as a prime example of late-'60s British blues-rock and one of Beck's best records.
Side 1: "All Shook Up" (Otis Blackwell) – 4:53 / "Spanish Boots" (Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart and Ron Wood) – 3:37 / "Girl From Mill Valley" (Nicky Hopkins) – 3:49 / "Jailhouse Rock" (Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller) – 3:14
Side 2: "Plynth (Water Down the Drain)" (Nicky Hopkins, Rod Stewart and Ron Wood) – 3:09 / "The Hangman's Knee" (Jeff Beck, Nicky Hopkins, Tony Newman, Rod Stewart and Ron Wood) – 4:49 / "Rice Pudding" (Jeff Beck, Nicky Hopkins, Tony Newman and Ron Wood) – 7:22
LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean, fresh labels which have one light spindle trace on one side and less than a handful on the other - this copy has seen very little play
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+
Both surfaces retain their original deep, like new glossy sheen and are practically unmarked - there is some age-related 'misting' to the edge of Side One and a few wispy light hairlines but these have no audio impact
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT++/NEAR MINT
Loud, strong and rough STEREO cut with a very, very dirty sound - not in its audio performance but in its 'one-take' raw, live feel which is incredibly immediate, very heavy and full of restless energy and excitement
And my careful play-check at loud volume revealed no major audio of note - no scratches, just two non-intrusive 'pops' over the course of both sides and no groove-wear or distortion - this is a beautiful copy with pretty much flawless audio delivery throughout and it sounds absolutely sensational - fantastic LP
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT
The untreated G&L flipback sleeve has a few light marks but is overall, very clean with no wear to speak of on the edges the or spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) - all spine text is clear and bold - a very example of this easily worn, untreated flipback cover
INNER SLEEVE: NEAR MINT
The original tinted EMI advertising inner is practically untouched - clean and unmarked with no seam splits
ALL RECORDS ARE PACKAGED WITH THE VINYL OUTSIDE OF THE SLEEVE TO PREVENT ANY 'KNIFING' DURING TRANSIT
A PROTECTIVE POLY SLEEVE, NEW INNER SLEEVE WITH NEW ANTI-STATIC LINER, QUALITY BOX (NOT ENVELOPE) MAILER AND AMPLE STIFFENERS ARE ALWAYS USED TO ENSURE THAT YOUR RECORD ARRIVES SAFELY
