The relation of poetry to jazz culture goes back decades before Jayne Cortez put out this unique Strata-East album. Many think of Keroac or Ginsberg writing poetry to the rhythms and feel of jazz, but that was the 50s version. By the early sixties, the Black Arts Movement, featuring such dignitaries as Langston Hughes and Audre Lorde, was making waves in the world, and its connection to black music, especially jazz, was unavoidable. Of these poets, the one most tied to jazz is Jayne Cortez. She grew up in LA, taking the surname of her Filipino grandmother early on, and married Ornette Coleman in 1954 when she was only eighteen. She's the mother to Denardo, who dedicated much of his life to supporting her career as well as Ornette's. Not taking to Ornette's wild New York life (especially that he was avoiding any work that wouldn't pay his price), she divorced him and went back to LA, forming a theatre troupe in the Watts district.
That just sets up her pedigree. Her poetry itself works well on the page, but it feels to me like the best way of enjoying it is on her relatively few albums. For this one, her first, she returned to New York to record with legendary bassist Richard Davis and no other musicians. If that sounds like the setting for an ego trip, put all such concerns aside. Davis needs no other accompaniment to provide the perfect backdrop to her wonderful readings. There are many tracks here, but one should quickly put those aside and see this as one long poem where Davis connects perfectly to what Cortez is reading.
And what she's reading, in her strong, dynamic voice, is tied into the black experience as well as jazz. She doesn't mention Coleman, but she sure mentions many others, especially Coltrane. She berates her audience, for instance, for possibly not knowing Trane's music, or to have not heard him during his time. She also takes on love, and this was around the time that she married a sculptor. Her lyrics, which fly at the listener in her smooth, confident voice, are best heard in the context of the music. What must be mentioned, though, is how her voice works as its own form of percussion. Listen closely and the rhythm can be heard, and can be considered to wind and peri with Davis' bass, which rises and falls to her cadence. It's good stuff and shows another way that music connected with writing during this time. If any of this sounds interesting at all, this record shouldn't be missed.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(a) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(b) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NEAR MINT !
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. (nothing significant)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER

POSTAGE & SHIPPING:
We offer three postage rates for domestic orders: USPS Media Mail, USPS Priority Mail and USPS Express Mail and three rates for international shipments: USPS First Class, USPS Priority International Mail, and USPS Express International Mail (in a small number of cases, we will, at our discretion and for purely technical reasons, substitute First Class Mail with eBay's Global Shipping, which is fundamentally the same service at about the same cost). INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS PLEASE NOTE: WE RECOMMEND (BUT DO NOT INSIST) that you select USPS International Priority Mail when making a payment.
INTERNATIONAL POSTAGE rates vary from one region of the world to another. For SPECIFIC international and domestic postage rates, please click on " Shipping, returns, and payments" tab in the header of our listing.

CRITICALLY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
(A) All orders valued at $50.00 or more will be shipped fully insured against loss, damage or theft by ShipCover, eBay's contracted insurer, at our expense (B) Yes, we do combine items into a single shipment; in order to enable this feature, the winning bidders should WAIT until their last item of interest ends and ONLY THEN make a payment. We can only make reasonable inference on the record's playing condition based on its visual appearance. (D) This seller will NOT cancel erroneous, frivolous and prank bids. The bidders can do so on their own, by visiting eBay's Site Map, then clicking on Bid Retractions link. (E) This seller does not specifically grade or describe certain items, such as: shrink (cellophane) wrap and accompanying extras (inserts, booklets, etc.); however, the presence of these items WILL be noted and accompanied by the gallery photo(s). (F) Please do not submit any bids on our items if you have insufficient user history.
