Here is a fabulous LP Box Set of Bach's Six Solo Cello Suites by Janos Starker. These are pressed on three (3) digital Teldec DMM LPs sold by Sefel Records. Pressed in Germany around 1984. This is a very rare set by perhaps the greatest cellist in the history of recorded music. Starker's performance is that of a master of Bach's music, as if it were actually written for Starker. This is largely due to the overwhelming talent of Starker and a huge demand for works of Bach and others of that era. Starker notes himself that he became immersed in all aspects of these Cello Suites so that he could play them the way the great master J.S. Bach would have want them played. There can be no more definitive interpretation, and probably no more higher fidelity LPs of this music.

Starker barely survived World War II and came to the United States in 1948. Noteworthy to his professional career, in 1953, Starker became principal cellist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra when Fritz Reiner became the music director. In 1958, Starker moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where he settled for the rest of his life. At the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music  he became a professor and resumed his solo career, giving thousands of concerts on every continent. Music from his cello is truly fabulous.

Visual Ratings:

ALL LPs are visual NM to NM- in DMM branded "rice" sleeves. Box is excellent +, bright and clean. Includes booklet shown in photo. The spine labeling was done in magic marker and not in formal print (promo?).

Play-grading:

All six LP sides trace with near flawless playback (using an Ortofon X5-MC with an FG-70 stylus) throughout the three LPs, offering super low-noise, and ultra-Hi-Fi to match. You might find a copy of this set as fine as this one,  but you will not find one that sounds better.  The definition from these DMM LPs is outstanding.
