Offered is the 2nd Edition Audiophile Pressing of Richard Strauss' Don Quixote, recorded on the well-regarded RCA Victor Soria Series.

Included are all of the items you see in the photos - all of the original materials that came with the issue in 1960. These are described more fully below.

The performance by cello master Antonio Janigro is particularly impressive, as is the 22 page book designed by Leo Lionni. Featured in the book is  tipped-in artwork by Pablo Picasso, Francisco Goya, Salvador Dali and others.

Don Quixote, Op. 35 is a tone poem by Richard Strauss for cello, viola and orchestra. The work is based on the novel Don Quixote de la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes. Strauss composed this work in Munich in 1897. The premiere took place in Cologne on 8 March 1898, with Friedrich Grutzmacher as the cello soloist and Franz Wuelner as the conductor.

The original score is 45 minutes long and is written in theme and variations form, with the solo cello representing Don Quixote, and the solo viola, tenor tuba, and bass clarinet depicting his squire Sancho Panza. The second variation depicts an episode where Don Quixote encounters a herd of sheep and perceives them as an approaching army. Strauss uses dissonant flutter-tonguing in the brass to emulate the bleating of the sheep, an early instance of this extended technique. Strauss later quoted this passage in his music for Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme at the moment a servant announces the dish of "leg of mutton in the Italian style". Graham Phipps has examined the structure of the work in terms of Arnold Schoenberg's ideas of 'surface harmonic logic' and 'developing variation'.

THE VINYL -  EX+ :  Lightly played with minimal evidence of spindlewear, both of the LP surfaces retain all of their original gloss. 
 
Evident are some light marks from sleevewear, and a few shallow hairlines.  Red and Silver "Shaded Dog"  labels with bright color (please see photos). 
 
The record has been carefully handled, infrequently played, and the audiophile stereo audio playback is impressive.




THE BOX SET COVER, SLIPCASE AND BOOK -   EX+ :  Please see photos / exceptionally well-stored / bright colors / sharp corners / present on the top, front of the fabric outer case is a scuff mark, and a name (written in red ink) / all of the seams, including the spines, are intact / no other writing, paper loss, paper tears, stains or dirt.  


Included is the original Soria paper inner sleeve (please see photos. 

We have placed the LP into a separate, protective plastic sleeve.
