JAMES KOK

James Kok (born January 26, 1902 in Czernowitz in Bukovina, † 18 October 1976 in Berlin) was a Romanian musicians - clarinet, alto saxophone, fiddle - and director of a dance orchestra.
The father, a lawyer, gave the son Arthur (later "James") Kok the first violin lessons. At the Prague Conservatory, he studied violin, saxophone, clarinet, piano and arranging. In order to escape military service in his home country, Kok moved in 1923 to Berlin, where he founded his first band. In the following years, his dance band performed all over Germany and the first rehearsal recordings, led to an exclusive contract for the German Gramophone Company (September 1933-April 1935).

During this time the orchestra was almost always engaged in Moka Efti in Berlin but on 1 May 1935 the Reich Music Chamber withdrew his work permit, as Kok was repeated guilty of dissident expressions, using a hot style of playing and arranging and unadjusted and uncertainties in its "Arian proof". Now without Kok, the orchestra played at first in a suburb of Berlin, then all musicians choose Erhard Bauschke the new orchestra leader. For the summer of 1935 season the new orchestra was ready, now with a "pure Aryan occupation", too. 
Run out from Germany, James Kok presented in Switzerland a new, own orchestra and played until the end of August 1935 in Zurich. Again, as his work and residence permit was not renewed, he returned to Romania, where he founded in 1936 a dance orchestra, again. The orchestra travelled all along Romania, played on local radio (1938) and went on international tours to Switzerland (1938) and in the Netherlands (1939). Then, during the war, Kok settled in Geneva, where he put together another band of emigrants.
When after the war, the musicians returned to their home countries, Kok had to disband his last orchestra. Kok emigrated to USA and spent some years with relatives, but he returned to Berlin in 1969 where he died a few years later (1976).

In addition to concert performances of his own compositions, his repertoire consisted of pop melodies and snappy dance titles. Classically trained, he was not an outstanding solist. Nevertheless he is considered one of the best representatives of the swing musicians generation in Berlin in the '30s and his orchestra, for which he wrote his arrangements, was based on the models of Jimmie Lunceford and the Casa Loma Orchestra.

78s GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light. My code ,in red includes only general wear (Greying, surface wear) and light scratches. All other damages are especially indicated and are not part of the grading below (corresponding to VJM codein yellow).

        1  =   M   (Mint): never played on gramophone /phonograph but is not used in my 78s auctions. 

       1-2 = NM  (Near Mint): top copy, no traces of use, virtually as new.

          2  =     E+   (Excellent plus): exellent copy, a few light, non-sounding rubs/marks 

          2-3 =    E   (Excellent):  light traces of wear (rubs/marks), very light greying and/or very light scratches.

           3  =    E-  (excellent minus):  a good average copy  with more noticeable rubs and , marks, light greying, scratches possible.  

     3-4 =  V+  (very Good plus):  more traces of use, sonic wear from light greying. a minor average copy, scratches possible.

         4  =   V   (very Good):  some sounding wear with little distorsion, heavy rubs and marks , scratches possible.

         5  =   V - (very Good minus):  obvious sounding wear with distorsion , heavy rubs, marks, scratches, sealed cracks. an unsatisfactory copy for documentary purposes.  

Sometime a + or - after the grading number accentuate my personal valuation of the expressed grading, enhancing an expected better or worse aural playing.
