Fantastic single from trumpeter, bandleader, producer, label operator, songwriter and native Californian Jake Porter. Though Porter played with local and touring jazz groups as a journeyman in the ‘30s and ‘40s, he's best known for Combo Records, a Los Angeles label he operated in the '50s and early '60s. Combo's discography of vocal group R&B, blues and various jazzy instrumentals - famously recorded in Porter’s own basement - would include Gene And Eunice’s sizeable 1954 hit “Ko Ko Mo” as well as many of Porter’s own greasy R&B instros. 1960’s “Way Out East” has a bit of Los Angeles Latin R&B in its rhythm, but also hints at the exoticism of Ravel’s Bolero and various casual images of Iberia. In the ‘70s Porter remained active behind-the-scenes, but toured and recorded sporadically, even resuscitating Combo Records in the early ‘80s for two of his own LPs - It’s About Time and Plays Baja. Jake Porter passed away in 1993.
Vinyl is in VG to VG+ condition with light scuffs and scratches but nothing that impairs the audio. Light surface noise. Both sides sound great.
