Jackson C. Frank's original 1965 album, produced by Paul Simon, is a lost classic, daringly complex and honest, filled with virtuoso playing that is all the more impressive for the offhanded way that Frank and company (including a young Al Stewart on one track) make it look so easy. There is a convergence elements here that may confuse the uninitiated, because of their seeming contradictions -- a flashiness and assertiveness on the acoustic guitars and the approach to singing on numbers like "Don't Look Back" and "Yellow Walls" that are byproducts of Frank's early history as a rock & roller, a depth and complexity of blues playing that derives from life as much as from talent and dexterity; and the meld of American and English folk sounds is like nothing that any listener has heard from either side of the Atlantic anywhere else. Some of these elements paralleled characteristics of Simon's work -- he, like Frank, had been a devotee of rock & roll before he turned toward folk music, and also assimilated American and English folk influences while staying in London -- but Simon's resulting work was smoothly commercial and mostly comforting and upbeat, and even playful, whereas Frank's music seems laced with and pointed toward an overpoweringly serious and sad take on life and living. "Blues Run the Game," "Yellow Walls," "My Name Is Carnival," and "You Never Wanted Me" all help make album kind of overpowering -- but it's the downbeat nature of those same songs that likely would have prevented Jackson C. Frank from being anything much more than a major cult favorite at the time. Today it's just a brilliant piece of essential listening, and most easily found in its various reissues from Mooncrest, Castle, and Sanctuary Records.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has wrinkles along all three seams as well as across the front panel

-         Cover has two  corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the back side  (a small section on the back cover of about 1 1/ 2 square inch in size has been slightly eroded (scratched off) apparently in an effort to erase some small writing

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping
