Jackie Wilson is in top form on every track here. Others may be a bit put off by some of the dated aspects of the production and the occasionally mediocre material but the brilliance of Wilson's performance will pull them in anyway.

Wilson may have been the greatest pure vocalist of the pop and rock era; but because he was often saddled with awkward arrangements with plodding white choruses and orchestration and indifferent material, he isn't given the same respect as other rock n' soul pioneers like James Brown and Aretha Franklin. Accordingly most of his catalogue is tough to find these days, which is shame because Wilson, despite the production handicaps, produced a lot more great music than can be contained on any greatest hits package. This wonderful album proves it. Sure, those clumsy arrangements are there but the material is generally above average which was enough for Wilson to make it killer. The artist is inspired on just about every track and Wilson performs every song like it's a number one. There is no filler. He trills, he growls, he uses melismas, he skirts to the top of his range with his effortless ease and surprising dramatic effect. On some tracks his performance is so convincing he even makes the dated production sound cool. When he's given a decent arrangement and material like "Doggin' Around" with its tinkling piano heightening the tension, the effect is just devastating. Every songs captures the man's joy in performing.

Sure, much is made in the liner notes that the tracks on Jackie Sings the Blues (all original compositions unlike most blues tributes) aren't very bluesy in composition and arrangement. That may be true but the emotional effect of Wilson's performances allow the tracks to stand in that genre with no shame. And even if something like "Sazzle Dazzle" isn't a blues classic-or even blues- doesn't make it one iota less thrilling.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          This is the original flat-edge pressing

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           The album comes with its original 1-page insert.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.;  Similar tarnish can also be found on the inside gatefold

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).    Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged / bent.  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)

-         Small greasy stain noted on the back panel (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-         Cover has a small original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams   (yet)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
