Brief Info: John Richard ‘Jackie’ Lomax was an English guitarist and singer-songwriter. This proved to be one-off album on The Beatles Apple label, he made other albums with various musicians into the 1970s and later. It was recorded shortly after the release of The White Album after George Harrison – the last Beatle to return from India, produced it. Although it received impressive and favourable reviews on issue, it sold very poorly and is quite a hard one to find as an original. The lack of information on the main cover would not have helped – the details of musicians and credits were found inside. Although the Apple logo is seen on the cover, there is hardly any other information. As seen above, the backing includes all The Beatles and Eric Clapton amongst a most of others. So the Fab Four appears whilst they were still actually ‘Beatles’, so this somewhat overlooked Apple album has become a collector’s piece for Beatles collectors. Lomax wrote all the songs bar one – ‘Sour Milk Sea’ was written by Harrison. This is an ultimate first UK issue with 1 G mothers and stampers on both sides. The only thing missing is the inner sleeve – but I am sure the text sheet inside was cut out from the original inner as the paper feels just right for an inner of this time, and the edges are not absolutely razor sharp. This is NO reproduction for sure, and I am almost equally sure, this album did not have a loose sheet insert with it. A very fine copy that offers lovely clean sound, a few gentle superficial marks, but this appears very little played and has a nice cover as well. Not seen too often, a very fine overall, and very first issue.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single fully laminated format. Printed and made in England by McNeill Press. Includes the inner sheet, as stated, this very likely cut out from the inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain fine shine, freshness and clarity, a little dulling is seen under angled light. There is some fine lifting on the spine edge that shows little with full-on viewing. Some quite fine edge laminate creasing and a moderate one on the front near the top edge. Still attractive with only gentle clues to its considerable age.

Top Edge: Straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. The exposed strips both sides where the laminate ends naturally short are barely worn or rubbed. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has minimal traces of creasing. The text matter is also very well centred.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is small and light with very fine shape retained, just a couple of small tip creases, but no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce original 1960’s Apple cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner/ ‘Insert’: I include with this a brand new soft lined inner sleeve (as I do will all my records). As stated, the original inner I strongly suspect was cut into an ‘insert’ text sheet as seen on my picture. I am as certain as I can be, this is not a repro and an intact original inner sleeve is NOT included.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Most are fine surface marks near the beginning of side two – I feel sure there from manufacture, and to clear – they have NO sound and this record plays superbly throughout. A little dulling is seen on the run-out area of side two, the owner almost certainly stored this inside a vintage polylined alternative inner which can cause dulling as many collectors will know. The playing areas do not have it, and its totally harmless anyway. No penetrating stylus marks and superbly pressed on quality pure vinyl. Visually a very fine record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce Apple album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this ultimate first stereo pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. Both record and cover (and of course the ‘insert’, with no intact inner sleeve) are not for visual purists, but if sound quality is a priority, this will take some beating. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
