Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a small few light spindle marks. A lovely copy that plays superbly and appearing very little used.

Brief Artist & Album Info: After the split of Cream, the legendary bass-player and now multi-instrumentalist, issued this mini-classic. Short quirky songs with brilliantly bizarre and surreal lyrics by Pete Brown, a combination that was heard to great effect in Cream’s classic records. Still sounding as fresh and vibrant as when issued back in 1969, this famous album still impresses. It includes the brilliant ‘Theme For an Imaginary Western’ and this a lovely clean original with superb sound.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold format, the front and back laminated, the inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd, this includes the ‘Manufactured by Polydor Records Ltd London’ text which again confirms a first printing. Includes the original January 1969 date-coded inner sleeve.

Laminate Front & Back: Less seen with the front and back laminate, and this is a gorgeous example time and the one owner from new has largely overlooked. As superb as this cover looks with laminate, it can often suffer issues such as substantial lifting and cracking. Well this one has hardly any with only a gentle traces on a couple of corner tips, this possibly the least I have seen. So general adhesion is very impressive and even avoiding the mottled speckle many have (small air bubbles where it has not adhered well in manufacture). Both front and back surfaces retain lovely shine and freshness with no dulling, the lack of creasing will rarely be found on this cover, the only present being three fine spine edge hairlines on the front and a gentle surface one on the back near the bottom right corner. Bare in mind, the front is only single thickness card and delicate, this has survived in close to immaculate condition. Bruce’s portrait looks simply stunning. This has been cover-protected from new and the difference that makes is here to see.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely anything of note to fault, any hint of darkening to the predominately white surfaces gentle and light.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and parallel with any thickening or wear minimal and light.

Bottom Edges: Mostly as above with a little thickening seen end-on due to being the storage edge for many years.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All three card ends are crisp and sharp with minimal traces of any thickening, the record enters on the back edges.

Spine and Text: Close to immaculate as-seen. Straight, crisp and without compression with all text fully present under the smooth unpeeled laminate.

Corners: All close to as-made retaining better than excellent shape with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong and highly attractive all-round example of this unforgiving first-print cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This superb item should please most collectors. When the laminate is seen this fresh, shiny and without the usual issues, it is a thing of genuine beauty.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the Polydor polylined inner that has aged little with any paper darkening consistently relatively mild. Two neat untorn window circles and the lining clear and very fresh. All edges unsplit with no repairs and only one light corner area creased. This one clearly manufactured in 1969 as confirmed by the 37 /99 date code.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed, any dulling minimal and faint under light from the inner sleeve, this as light and mimimal as it ever gets and only seen near and on the run-out grooves as traces. A copy appearing only very lightly played, and with due care on all the evidence with any surface traces minimal and faint. No penetrating stylus scratches and it plays superbly. Visually a super record and few first issues will better this significantly and it should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality, classic album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything heard, and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been impressively and carefully stored and handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
