Irma Thomas - Time Is On My Side, Kent 010 * 1983 UK VINYL LP * SOUTHERN SOUL/NEW ORLEANS R&B

A fantastic anthology of Irma Thomas material from the mid-1960s. Irma Thomas is one of the undisputed great voices in soul music - a sadder, bluesier, more deep soul-styled approach -- one that would often use some slight touches of strings and sparkling production. Her 1964 gospel-choir aided version of “Time Is on My Side” beat the Stones’ take by several miles. The single “Wish Someone Would Care,” from the same year, is an autobiographical broken-hearted classic. It’s as resilient and enduring as you’d expect a song to be when it was sung by a woman who had already had four children at 19 and facing the break-up of her first marriage. "Ruler of My Heart" evolved into Otis Redding's "Pain in My Heart". Other cuts on the album are penned by Allen Toussaint (who also provides production duties), Van McCoy, and one of Randy Newman's earliest compositions.

Vinyl: Near Mint. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects.The labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And the vinyl is not warped.
