I joined Vinyl Me, Please right around the time they dropped that Ben Webster Soulville release — a classy way to start, like stepping into the jazz lounge wearing sunglasses indoors. Some of the records they sent me were great, and some made me wonder if the selection committee had briefly lost consciousness.

Eventually I had to face the truth: I was paying premium prices for vinyl I didn’t actually care about. It felt less like a curated experience and more like a monthly mystery box of “surprise, you don’t want this.” The cost kept creeping up, and I finally decided not to renew. Honestly, it was one of my wiser moments — because about a month later the whole club went under. If I’d stayed, I would’ve been out a ridiculous amount of cash and probably stuck with a farewell record titled Songs to Cry To While Canceling Subscriptions.

Now I’ve got a mountain of unplayed releases sitting around, up for grabs. It’s like a vinyl dragon hoard, except instead of gold it’s shrink‑wrapped LPs silently judging me from across the room.
