ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and rare LP from Telefunken (LE 6541, German pressing, purple/silver AH "Lanspiel33Platte" label – ED1, mono – no stereo edition exists, glossy laminated top-opening, stitched seam jacket) features conductor Désiré-Emile Inghelbrecht and l'Orchestre du Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in highly atmospheric performances of Debussy's La Mer and of the same composer's Ibéria*, No. 2 of Images, recordings originally made by Ducretet Thomson at the Salle Apollo, Paris, on 11 and 18* January 1954.
Wrote the eminent writer and critic Roger Nichols of the Testament CD series of Inghelbrecht's Debussy recordings in his review for the March 2002 issue of The Gramophone:
"Performances to shock those who prefer their Debussy lax and invertebrate. Desire-Emile Inghelbrecht, wrote Dominique Sordet in his invaluable little book Douze chefs d'orchestre (Fischbacher: 1924), mentions the rages to which Inghelbrecht had once been subject, but claimed that by the age of 44 the conductor was now a reformed being and that orchestras no longer quailed before him. However, Henri Barraud, Director of Music for French Radio after the Second World War, found him still true to his `caractere de cochon'. The personal foibles of conductors do not often feature in record reviews, perhaps rightly, but Inghel's less than equable temperament is an important constituent of his interpretations. There are no languid hesitations on the bar-line, no self-indulgent rubatos at climaxes, no dwelling on a pretty sound at the expense of the line. All this, in Debussy, gives us, you may feel, more Inghel the man of action than Debussy the dreamer. But at the end of his biography of Debussy, whom he had known well, Inghelbrecht is obviously alive to the dangers since he writes of the unhappy period after Debussy's death when 'people claimed to be reacting against the nebulosities of Debussysme by wringing the neck of sensitivity."
Incidentally, on the reverse side of the jacket is printed a listing of other titles from the Telefunken catalog.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the laminted, top-opening, stitched-seam jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping at corners, slight edgwear, small instances of creasing, and mild discoloration, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is light surface noise throughout, in general the playback remains quite fine. However, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
