Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with an intense orange finish. In number, spindle marks are few and only show under light. All evidence, including immaculate playing surfaces and sound indicate only very light, careful plays.

Cat Number: S 63722.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A massive 170 grams. Substantially heavier than most-all CBS records I have held before. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: One of the pioneering bands from ‘The Summer of Love’, formed and led by violinist David LaFlamme, famed for using a 5-stringed instrument. Famed for the brilliant ‘White Bird’ track that opens the album, this is a lovely set that features Pattie Santos on vocals and LaFlamme’s wife Linda. In it’s own way, a groundbreaking debut album but they did not go on to become as big as other West Coasts acts like Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead and their subsequent albums failed to hit the mark quite like this one. An album that skilfully blended elements of rock, jazz, folk, classical and world music and LaFlamme was often described as the Carlos Santana of the violin. This is a lovely UK copy, the record being exceptional and is almost a freak pressing at a massive 170 grams. The wear-prone cover is also in very fine condition with any wear modest. This original will please most collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: EX and given the format which rarely is seen devoid of substantial wear and often damage, it’s arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with the front being single thickness card. The record is stored via the centrefold which puts immense pressure on the thin and fragile spine. With this monster pressing inside since the late 60s, this has survived in very fine condition. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day.

Cover Front: The only wear of real note is on the left edge on the fragile spine fold, this has moderately light rubbing. This delicate front is seldom seen with so little rubbing on the main face and the lack of creasing is equally unusual. It retains bright vibrant colour and looks really lovely. Many regard this cover as one of the greats from this period.

Cover Back: The back is equally fine and any edge blemishes here are very minor indeed. No ringwear, clean and any rubbing little and faint.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces appear barely worn at all and I really do consider this remarkable with such a heavyweight record inside. The pressure on a single thickness spine is immense and most will buckle under the stress. Remember, the record is stored from the inner centrefold and not by the traditional right edge that is sealed. Even the top and bottom of the entrance area is unsplit or torn and appears unweakned or barely even creased. Simply incredible, but true.

Top Edges: Both are very neat indeed and any burring to the thin front barely registers.

Bottom Edges: A little light burring to both in the odd place of two, no surprise being the resting edges and supporting this weight all these years, it has to be considered normal, but in this case very minor indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any rubbing light and minor on the closed back edge, the front is crisp and very neat indeed and it has not been trimmed or tampered with.

Spine and Text: The front fold has rubbed as mentioned already but the back has not. The actual face of the spine is very fine indeed and has little wear at all with all text present and unworn. Being so thin, it has tilted slightly from right to left which is the very least anyone could expect. But it has suffered crushing with no creasing to the spine face.

Corners: The corners have rubbed a little but far from excessively, infact the right four are very neat indeed and retain fine shape. A little more to the front of the spine to match the fold rubs.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very fragile late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner: A fine ‘Heavy on CBS’ unlined inner that grades around Excellent. Minor ruffling and clean with no edge splits.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and massively pressed at a staggering 170 grams. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with complex groove patterns that emphasise complex sound. This does look more like a classical record for the ‘groove-reader’. This has barely any noteworthy marks or blemishes and looks lovely, the sheer weight in the hand is immense. Visually a super, almost ‘freak’ pressing that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Violin is well-known to be one of the most challenging instruments to track on record, and those groove patterns with very jagged paths will challenge more than most ‘rock’ albums. So the fact the sound is fully focused and sharp proves beyond doubt this has hardly been played and certainly not abused by old mono needles. The one and only owner had stereo equipment going right back to the mid-60s, which is good news for this and others that will follow from this fine collection. Any surface sounds barely registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing with deep grooves. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
