Label Conditions: Both in fantastic condition: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with an intense orange finish. With just a couple of tiny, faint spindle marks, all evidence, including immaculate playing surfaces and sound indicate only one or two careful plays.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: One of the pioneering bands from ‘The Summer of Love’, formed and led by violinist David LaFlamme, noted for using a 5-stringed instrument. Famed for the brilliant ‘White Bird’ track that opens the album, this is a lovely set that features Pattie Santos on vocals and LaFlamme’s wife Linda. In it’s own way, a groundbreaking debut album but they did not go on to become as big as other West Coasts acts like Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead and their subsequent albums failed to hit the mark quite like this one. An album that skilfully blended elements of rock, jazz, folk, classical and world music and LaFlamme was often described as the Carlos Santana of the violin. This is a lovely UK copy, the record being exceptional and is substantially pressed. The wear-prone cover is also in very fine condition with any wear quite modest. This original will please most collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-). An unlaminated gatefold format with the front being single thickness card. The record is stored via the centrefold which puts immense pressure on the thin and fragile spine. With this substantial weight pressing inside since the late 60s, this has survived in very fine condition with most of any wear on the top of the spine. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day.

Cover Front: A most lovely cover for design but so prone to wear and damage. This front has little. A few press marks a little below the word ‘Beautiful’ seen under light and unusually, barely any creasing or rubbing. Any present confined to near the top edge.

Cover Back: A little rubbing on the spine fold near the top and also near the top edge. Little else to fault that apart and the lack of real ring wear is always good news.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces appear barely worn at all and I really do consider this remarkable with such a heavy record inside. The pressure on a single thickness spine is immense and most will buckle under the stress. Remember, the record is stored from the inner centrefold and not by the traditional right edge that is sealed. Even the top and bottom of the entrance area is unsplit or torn and appears unweakned or barely even creased. Just mild record impression on the right but this has not rubbed to form ringwear.

Top Edges: Both are exceptionally neat and have avoided thickening or burring.

Bottom Edges: Still very neat but a little patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Again very neat with any rubbing confined to the top and bottom areas.

Spine and Text: Here is where the majority of any rubbing lies: near the top, for approx the final fifth, it has rubbed and chipped. Luckily this has missed the text which is pretty much all present with little wear.

Corners: The corners have light and small tip rubs, more on the spine top in conjunction with the wear there as mentioned in the previous paragraph. Fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: Overall, an attractive cover with the main four faces in lovely condition. Most wear on the spine top area, if this is an issue, do not bid – but the lovelyd original record more than compensates.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): The black and white CBS promotional inner is in superb condition. One corner crease of near mint with all edges unsplit (or repaired), clean and fresh. These were not lined.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-) A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with intricate groove patterns that emphasise complex sound. This does look more like a classical record for the ‘groove-reader’. This has barely any noteworthy marks or blemishes and looks lovely, the weight in the hand is highly impressive. Visually a super example that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Violin is well-known to be one of the most challenging instruments to track on record, and those groove patterns with very jagged paths will challenge more than most ‘rock’ albums. So the fact the sound is fully focused and sharp proves beyond doubt this has hardly been played and certainly not abused by old mono needles. The one and only owner had stereo equipment going right back to the mid-60s, which is good news for this and others that will follow from this fine collection. Any surface sounds barely registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing with deep and incredibly clean unworn grooves. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, never underestimate how challening this complex album is. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended with just slight reservation on the spine top rubbing, any doubts…

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
