It's no longer new, the 'Beauty The Beast' principle between the former Belle And Sebastian fairy and the Screaming Trees grumbler. But why not twenty more sequels if such records keep coming out? Although the concept is not strictly followed here: Campbell has two solo numbers that are very reminiscent of Mazzy Star, on two others it is not Lanegan who sings, but guest vocalist Willy Mason (really big in Townes van Zandt's "No Place To Fall", by the way) !), and then there's a surprisingly infernal rocking instrumental, of all things, the title song of the album. But even with the classic Campbell / Lanegan duets a development takes place in their musical relationship: It hardly sounds like Nancy & Lee; a strange, floating, electrical tension was created, as it also appeared in some of the better Gainsbourg duet recordings. An unbelievable highlight of the album is obviously stolen from James Brown, but the result justifies everything: "Come Undone" is something you want to hear over and over again. Just for the beatific string arrangements alone. (2010) **************************************************

The collaboration between Isobel Campbell (formerly Belle & Sebastian) and Mark Lanegan has been successful for a long time, which their album "Hawk" proves. The harmonious duo wanders through styles and travels through time, drawing inspiration from country, folk, blues and pop from the 50s to 70s. This makes "Hawk" their most varied album to date: from sugar-sweet, melancholic pop to rough blues and rock'n'roll pieces. The track list includes "Snake Song" and "No Place To Fall", two cover versions by the icon Townes Van Zandt that are in no way inferior to the originals. In addition to soulful numbers ("Come Undone") there is also a real Christmas song ("Time of The Seasons") as well as the blues swing "Hawk" and the musical jewel "Sunrise". The beautiful gospel number "Lately" rounds off the album. A successful thing. **************************************************

Aber warum nicht noch zwanzig weitere Fortsetzungen, wenn immer wieder solche Platten dabei herauskommen? Wobei das Konzept hier auch nicht gar so streng verfolgt wird: Campbell hat zwei sehr schön an Mazzy Star erinnerende Solo-Nummern, auf zwei weiteren singt nicht Lanegan, sondern Gastvokalist Willy Mason (wirklich groß übrigens in Townes van Zandts "No Place To Fall"!), und dann gibt's auch noch ein überraschend infernalisch rockendes Instrumental, ausgerechnet der Titelsong des Albums. Doch auch bei den klassischen Campbell/Lanegan-Duetten findet eine Entwicklung statt in deren musikalischer Beziehung: Nach Nancy & Lee klingt das kaum noch; da ist eine merkwürdige schwebende, elektrische Spannung entstanden, wie sie in einigen der besseren Gainsbourg-Duettaufnahmen auch aufkam. Ein unglaublicher Höhepunkt des Albums ist zwar sehr offensichtlich bei James Brown geklaut, aber das Ergebnis rechtfertigt alles: "Come Undone" will man immer wieder hören. Schon allein für die seligmachenden Streicherarrangements. (2010)
