Two grandiose voices have come together on one record: the elven-like, almost breathy vocals by Isobel Campbell and the smoky baritone by Mark Lanegan (sounds like a synthesis of Johnny Cash and Tom Waits!). The compositions come from the Scottish woman Campbell, who draws on classical songwriting and arranges the instrumentation acoustically accordingly: piano, cello, harpsichord and glockenspiel (everything played by Isobel himself), vibraphone, violin, harp, acoustic guitar and strings. In “The Circus Is Leaving Town” we hear a Hammond organ that, together with Lanegan's voice, creates a wonderful atmosphere that even a Johnny Cash couldn't have brought more enchanting. Most of the songs are ballads or country-oriented folk songs, which often give you goose bumps, songs in which everything is right down to the last detail and appear extremely harmonious. .................

Da haben sich zwei grandiose Stimmen auf einer Platte vereint: der elfenhafte, fast hauchende Gesang von Isobel Campbell und der rauchige Bariton von Mark Lanegan (klingt wie eine Synthese aus Johnny Cash und Tom Waits!). Die Kompositionen stammen von der Schottin Campbell, die dabei auf klassisches Songwriting zurückgreift und die Instrumentierung dementsprechend akustisch ausrichtet: Piano, Cello, Cembalo und Glockenspiel (alles von Isobel selbst gespielt), Vibraphon, Violine, Harfe, Akustikgitarre und Streicher. In „The Circus Is Leaving Town“ hören wir eine Hammond Orgel, die zusammen mit Lanegans Stimme eine wunderbare Atmosphäre schafft, die selbst ein Johnny Cash nicht hinreissender gebracht hätte. Die meisten Songs sind Balladen oder Country-orientierte Folksongs, die nicht selten für Gänsehaut sorgen, Lieder, bei denen alles bis ins Detail stimmt und äußerst harmonisch wirken. .................
