MATRIX NUMBERS:

RECORD TWO: 2369004 A//1 SIDE TWO ∇ 420 11 2 / 2369004 B//1 SIDE THREE ∇ 420 11 8
THE RECORDS ARE HOUSED FIRSTLY IN A THIN, SOFT AND DELICATE SINGLE SLEEVE ("Printed in Germany') WHICH IS ENCLOSED WITH A HEAVIER SIX PANEL CRUCIFORM OUTER SLEEVE (again "Printed in Germany' - as far as I am aware all these sleeves were German printed)
AND THE SET COMES COMPLETE WITH THE TWO ORIGINAL PLAIN WHITE POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVES WITH BLUE PRINTING (one is dated December 1971 and the other January 1972)
The sheer tenacity (albeit undeniably fitting) of this double-disc set has made Black Moses one of Isaac Hayes' most revered and best-known works.
The multi-instrumental singer/songwriter and producer had been a central figure in the Memphis soul music revolution of the mid-1960s.
Along with Booker T. and The MG's, Hayes' wrote and performed on more Stax sides than any other single artist.
By the time of this release - his fifth overall, and first two-record set - Hayes had firmly established himself as a progressive soul artist.
His stretched out and well-developed R&B jams, as well as his husky-voiced sexy spoken "raps" became key components in his signature sound.
Black Moses not only incorporates those leitmotifs, but also reaffirms Hayes abilities as an unmistakably original arranger.
Although a majority of the album consists of cover material, all the scores have been reconfigured and adapted in such a fundamental way that, for some listeners, these renditions serve as definitive.
This is certainly true of the extended re-workings of Jerry Butler's "Brand New Me," or Esther Phillips' "You're Love Is So Doggone Good" - both of which are prefaced by the spoken prelude found in each respective instalment of "Ike's Rap."
The pair of Curtis Mayfield tunes -- "Man's Temptation" and "Need to Belong to Someone" - are also worthy of note for the layers of tastefully scored orchestration - from both Hayes and his long-time associate Johnny Allen.
The pair's efforts remain fresh and discerning, rather than the dated ersatz strings and horn sections that imitators were glutting the soul and pop charts and airwaves with in the mid-1970s.
Track Listing: (Side One is backed with Side Four, Side Two with Side Three)
SIDE ONE: Never Can Say Goodbye (5:07) / (They Long To Be) Close To You (8:58) / Nothing Takes The Place Of You (5:29) / Man's Temptation (4:59)
SIDE TWO: Never Gonna Give You Up (5:47) / Ike's Rap II (2:10) / Help Me Love (5:21) / Need To Belong To Someone (5:15) / Good Love (5:15)
SIDE THREE: Ike's Rap III (1:35) / Your Love Is So Doggone Good (7:40) / For The Good Times (5:20) / I'll Never Fall In Love Again (5:02)
SIDE FOUR: Part-Time Love (8:30) / Ike's Rap IV (2:10) / A Brand New Me (7:30) / Going In Circles (6:59)
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright, fresh and unmarked with only light spindle traces - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: All four vinyl surfaces still retain their original deep, like new glossy sheen and are unmarked - NEAR MINT
VINYL Audio: The audio is crystal clear, deep, rich and warm and on playback at a loud volume it plays beautifully throughout all four sides with no major audio issues of note - no scratches, no sticks/jumps, no surface noise and barely any click/pops (just the occasional, isolated one here and there - very minor, nothing at all intrusive and really hardly worth a mention). A lot of this record is pretty quiet so it's important to find a clean pressing and this is one of the cleanest I have heard. Critically graded a strong EXCELLENT++ for audio - a beautiful playing copy which sounds absolutely gorgeous
INNER COVER: This untreated matt inner cover is very thin and delicate and easily worn but this one is clean and unmarked (and still retains it's 'SPECIAL COLLECTOR'S 2LP SET' sticker on the back). The opening edge has become a little 'grubby' from handling (please see close-up photos) but otherwise it is good and solid - VERY GOOD++
OUTER CRUCIFORM COVER: The original outer sleeve while still being matt and untreated is printed on thicker card than the inner cover so has faired better with only some light rubbing to the corners and no damage to the folds. There is however a sticker (or the impression of a sticker) on the front. This is from the shop where the album was originally purchased "The Turntable" in Hammersmith and even though the sticker is long gone it's impression remains. Otherwise the cover is in great shape - VERY GOOD++
And the two original plain white poly-lined inners have no splits - just some light creasing - EXCELLENT+
