Interpol's new album resumes a conversation the band has been having for over two decades, with little interest in novelty for novelty's sake. String sections, synths and acoustic guitars are woven into a style that, in spite of all the new additions, still rings authentically Interpol. The lead-off track 'This Mirror Weighs a Ton' and the follow-up 'See Out Loud' continue Interpol's preference for gnomic lyrics and darkened guitar work, but 'Iron City' widens the conversation to artificial intelligence. 'Wounded Soldier,' on the other hand, looks beyond personal themes to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Call it an "evolution," if you will, but it's a gradual one.
