Label/Format: Liberty – original blue format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both immaculate and rarely will this elusive record be seen like this. Ultra clean, incredibly fresh and attractive with just one or two beyond faint spindle traces. So faint on side one, I had to use a magnifier to even see a single possible trace. The owner of this record said he only played it once and it does almost remind of new.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 127 grams. About average for it’s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce and rare to find a 1969 record only played twice (after my mandatory sound check). The cover has some rubbing on the edges but this is so incredibly fragile and flimsy and few will avoid this to some extent. The main front and back look very nice indeed. I found inside the cover of this copy a promotional sheet which I have never seen before, this an interesting bonus piece for the discerning collector.

Brief Info: A Birmingham based psych-pop band that went a measured way of introducing the world to the talents of Jeff Lynne. This was their second album, and despite good reviews at the time, it failed to sell at all well. This factor left Lynne frustrated and he left the band to team-up with former brief member Roy Wood with his Move band. Just one Lynne-less album followed that faired even less well and the band folded. This self-titled album is a gem within it’s genre, very sort-after and it helped lay down the foundations of the huge commercial success that was to follow with The Electric Light Orchestra after his stint with The Move. The early talent of Lynne and his band are beautifully encaptured within this superb record that will delight most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single, very thin and flimsy unlaminated cover with fine surface texturing and matt finish. Printed and made in England by MacNeill.

Cover Front: The main front artwork if very impresisve and shows little wear apart from some fairly gentle rub on the edges and a moderate rub to the top left corner. This is up there with the flimsiest and fragile covers I have held and hardly any wonder some edge wear is present. There are a few fairly light surface creases that has little visual impact and the actual graphic of the band looks superb. The lack of rubbing and ring wear to the main area is a considerable bonus and almost achievement and this is really clean and even fresh.

Cover Back: Very similar in all aspects to the front and one of the few I have seen devoid of ring wear

Top Edge: A little light patchy rubbing, more near the fragile corners.

Bottom Edge: This has consistent moderate rubbing, hardly unusual for this storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild indeed, hardly any in fact. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed. A small thumb crease and possible tiny nick on the back shows little.

Spine and Text: Very thin and flimsy so overall, in quite fine condition overall with most of any rubbing on the top fold with is patchy. The central band name text is fully intact and present, one digit of the catalogue number has gone as has some of the Liberty text near the bottom.

Corners: All corners have moderate rubbing which few will avoid to some extent – this thin card is so soft and delicate.

Cover Summary: A very difficult cover in all respects and given that fact, I consider this still a very fine example with most of the important visual areas still attractive and clean, as can be clearly seen on my pictures. So not for the highly discerning collector, but many will enjoy this, and the record is exceptional and could in many cases prove a significant upgrade in it’s own right.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the original Polydor lined inner is included with only gentle hints of ageing. That in the form of modest discolouration and some glue darkening on the seams. The lining is ultra clear as seen through two immaculate window circles that remain crisp and neat. Barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Importantly for the connoisseur collector, this is date-coded 1/0470 which emphasises how early this copy is.

The Promotion Sheet: I found this inside the cover, I know little about it apart from it appears to promote the original record and clearly would be of interest to the discerning collector. Quite likely a reproduction from a late 60s original? Looks great anyway and not a piece of artwork you will see often, if ever.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): and they will rarely be seen better than this. A supreme visual copy that I could even contemplate grade full Mint – yes something I will rarely even consider, but this is a museum-quality record that is barely even run-in in vinyl terms. Ultra clean with rich shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Even under my bright visual inspection lamp, I am struggling to find even a mega fine hairline let alone anything more. This record really could pass for new even with minuscule traces of usage on the labels which are equally impressive. No damaging old stylus have been near this beauty and this truly could be the ultimate upgrade for any serious vinyl collector. Such records that have probably not seen light-of-day for decades, often acquire inner bag rash - Polydor inners one of the prime suspects – but this record has totally avoided it. I do not grade any record I know to be played Mint, but was very tempted on this one. Although the record has some storage edge wear, the record has without doubt hardly been handled or removed. Visually a stunning record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This top quality Liberty record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, any traces beyond gentle and infrequent and this being played on one of the world’s most revealing turntables. No pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few available copies will come close to matching, let outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful pop-psych album. A record that will prove near impossible to find better and this disc merits my highest possible recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
