Label/Format: Vertigo – original format with matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a very small few light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. The high revealing white side two retains genuine whiteness with no toning, grubbiness or handling marks. This super pair will prove immensely difficult to find better on this title.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 121 grams. About average for it’s era.

Rarity: Scarce: okay, not one of the major league Swirls, but still quite elusive, especially in this very fine all-round condition. The cover is very prone to all forms of wear, apart from some mild ver patchy edge rubbing, there is little to fault. The record is beautiful visually and plays the same, even the inner is superb, this being the ‘black’ second types used around this time. A copy many, if not most collectors will enjoy owning.

Brief Info: Initially a member of the first Fairport Convention line-up before leaving to form Matthews Southern Comfort. Then going solo, this is the second of two albums he made on the Vertigo Spiral label - a label that specialised in progressive rock with some jazz and folk artists too. A very fine self produced album of top-quality folk-rock with lovely clean sound, featuring many of his own songs. This fabulous clean copy should please his fans and collectors of this massively collectable label. Although not one of the heavy-weight Swirls in terms of rarity, this is now also getting harder to find, especially in such lovely clean condition, this being the first copy I have had for some considerable time.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this highly wear-prone dark cover is arguably undergraded as such. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt surfaces that are textured on all surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes the second Swirl ‘black’ style inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Small corner tip rubs and a smallish fine rub on the top edge near the left corner, that apart, little else to fault on a cover that is rarely seen half this nice. All other ink nigh-on fully present on the delicate textured surface that has no sticker marks or issues. Barely any creasing at all with any hint of rim impression minuscule. Deep fresh colour also retained with even the perilous left fold hinge also unrubbed or scuffed.

Cover Back: The back is pretty much the same with a small few small patchy edge and tip rubs. I think both outer faces have faired very well indeed for such intolerant surfaces. The lack of creasing and especially ringwear are major pluses.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside gatefold is fantastic with practically nothing to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush, any surface rubbing on the actual folds is minimal and faint. As stated above, a little fine patchy rubbing on the actual edges of the front and back.

Bottom Edges: Very light and equally patchy rubbing, these, somewhat against the odds, have faired very well being the traditional storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Vertigo, being Vertigo, always did things different. Unlike most covers of this format, the record is stored on the front open edge, the back is fully closed. So the front open edge is clean, mostly very sharp with minimal traces of wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on, this naturally protected by the back that is a tiny bit wider. The back has a proper tucked and folded edge which is hardly worn and very neat. Only the inside being the card end panel shows gentle traces of thickening which is only patchy and light. No enhancements or trimming guaranteed, indeed the entrance edges are not cut quite flush in manufacture which is pretty much normal on these types.

Spine and Text: A super spine with hardly any wear, just a little rubbing at the very ends. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and the surface clean, unfaded or aged.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs few will ever avoid. Very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please man, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a superb original type two ‘black’ style inner sleeve with little to fault at all. Only with a hint of darkening and a gentle semi-crease on the bottom right. Clean, still fresh with two crisp undamaged window circles and the polylining incredibly clear with minimal crinkle. All edges unsplit with no repairs, these inners are seldom much better than this.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most collectors. Indeed this original Swirl could prove a significant upgrade for many.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this ultimate first, 1 1 1 stamper pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
