IAN CARR with NUCLEUS – Solar Plexus ORIG Vertigo Swirl LP / 6360 039 (UK, Stereo, 1971)

Happy to present the 3rd Nucleus LP for the UK Swirl label.  In my opinion one of Carr’s best and containing the fabulous ‘Snakehips’ Dream’ – surely one of the most cohesive examples of jazz/rock/funk fusion you’ll find!

The non-laminated, gatefold sleeve is never an easy one to find in super condition – the black background often catches wear and rubs.  This is an above average example which still maintains excellent shape but has picked up some foxing spots over the years – these are confined to the lower front left and are only visible when tilted into the light.  Viewed from most angles, this sleeve shows little rubbing, certainly better than most. Couple of light rubs to the front top edges and some alongside the edges inside the gate.  Spine is more than EX with no compression and all text still perfectly legible and proud.  No writing, sticker pulls or residue (as in so many Swirl sleeves!).  No real rubbing to the top edge but some to the right side of the bottom edge.  Corners still strong, tiny bit of wear to the bottom left and right, top ones still excellent.  Slight ring impression to the rear but NO rips, tears or splits.  Inside gate is still pretty fresh.  My opinion is that you’ll have to look long or pay high to find a better one.  It’s a TRUE VG+ (Very Good Plus) though no doubt an EX in most people’s books.

The original 1971 Swirl labels are just magnificent!  Barely any spindle evidence (2 or 3 plays?) still near pure white, no writing, dirt or residue.  This is how you want your Swirl labels!

The sharp, medium weight vinyl is a GREAT COPY!  Nothing seems to have marked these surfaces.  So expect NO scratches, no scuffs and no hairlines.  NO nicks, no craters or bobbles.  Possibly just some isolated dust pockets but NO embedded dirt.  This record looks lovely and grades an honest EX+ (Excellent Plus), probably near mint to a lot of eyes.  The disc would sit proudly in any top grade Swirl collection!  IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and as you would expect from such a good looking disc, there are next to no audio blemishes. A light tick on S1/T3, a couple of ticks right at the end of Side A and a single click on S2/T2 were all I picked up and I listened hard!  The play grade, you’ll be pleased to know at least matches the visual one with NO snap, crackle or pop, no hiss, no distortion or loss of clarity/lack of definition.  Great Swirl vinyl!

I was tempted to keep this – it’s a great record but my loss is your gain!

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades.  After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN?  What is NM+? Or EX---?   These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay.  I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade.  Excellent, by dictionary definition means ‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
