grading scheme:

Near Mint:  Complete original shine on the vinyl with at most a few light surface scuffs due to abrasion made by paper edge of sleeve sliding on vinyl or from inadvertently lightly scraping one's fingernail across the grooves when trying to pop the disc off the turntable after a play. Any background noise during play will be minimal, purely the result of poor vinyl quality/lax pressing process during manufacture rather than subsequent bruising or wear. Labels will be nearly pristine, without wear or soiling. A Near Mint record looks and plays as a new record would, or at worst shows just a hint of use or handling. In the case of promotional copies, a "professionally written" indication of the plug side may be present, such as a felt penned 'X' or circled song title on one or both labels.

VG++: Quiet sounding as an audio grade, with an occasional tic or crackle sound noticeable. Visually, some minor scuffs or marks on label and/or vinyl on one or both sides. Nice looking record, definitely, and pleasing to listen to.

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+): Records assigned this grade will always have been handled carefully or at least luckily. Typical scenario here is that their accumulated bouts on and around the turntable, while individually creating but minuscule "insults" to the disc, do cumulatively add up to a bit of wear.  Surface scuffs and/or "(fine) hairline" scratches may be seen, but they don't create anything beyond a low level of background hiss or crackle--upon play the music comes across clear, without distortion. Label wear is minimal, with a "ring" or other soiling barely evident. Vinyl still looks shiny, and from a distance of a meter or so probably almost like new.

VERY GOOD (VG): This grade, as typically used on eBay, means "not VERY good", but instead: "okay if you aren't fussy". There can be noticeable, uniform background noise,  staying for the most part beneath the largely undistorted music. There IS noise, generally most apparent at the start and end of the tune and of course as well during quiet portions of the song. Scuffs and light scratches which by and large cannot be felt by the fingers do make noise such as clicks or pops, but not a constant litany of them. Much of the original vinyl luster may have "flown the coop". Groove wear is evident; moderate but not extreme.The labels may well have tears, writing, or stickers (tol, wol, sol). A VG disc is a record collectors wish they had a better copy of, but given the expected cost of upgrading, depending on one's predilections, a VG recording can ofttimes suffice. The music is still there, but accompanied by some static.... So why grade such condition "Very Good"? I don't know, except that it is used to grade a record better than "Good", which come to find out, is about "Fair" by  standard dictionary definition I would think. See below.


VG-:  that grade which is useful for a situation when VG won't hack it as an honest grading of the disc due to some major indignity--though the darn thing is game enough to play winsomely, ugly labels and all, at one of those wild rent parties or basement sock hop. Sheen or luster? Hereabouts: a thing of the past. Most likely the record went sans sleeve in its home environment and the grooves subsequently transmit high fidelity sound--nada!. I have noticed though, much to my surprise and joy, that some of those records pressed back in the 1950s and 60s, while looking trashed-out do manage somehow to play wonderfully, delivering terrific sounding music with minimal noise. On these occasional specimens a higher PLAY grade would be awarded. Perhaps a deep groove pressing may be the reason. I've found examples of this miraculous phenomenon on both polystyrene and vinyl. Back to VG-: the level of unwanted noise in this grade can get on one's nerves and the music enters the murky realm.

GOOD, or G means "kind of acceptable" to the desperate or financially strapped collector, as a stop-gap measure until a better copy can be obtained--if that is feasible.
With those truly scarce items, a 'good' copy could well be considered a worthy asset in the collection. With these abused 45s, the background noise is 'way up there', dueling in the foreground with the originally-placed-there music for the upper hand--distortion is undeniable. A "Good" condition copy of a particular record tends to price out at somewhere around 1/10th a near mint example. Anyway, a 'G' record should still play through without skipping--it isn't THAT bad--again, though, the music is at least moderately degraded in fidelity. Hey, it PLAYS ROUGH, okay? Scratched up indeed, somewhat gouged even...obviously collectors avoid buying or selling a 45 in this sort of condition unless the price nominal or the record really tough to find at an affordable price.

I play grade all the records I offer on eBay. I try to photograph the labels to catch even quite minor flaws but sometimes the focus and lighting aren't cooperating.
