This beautiful 3 LP box set – amazingly, a still-sealed copy – from RCA Victor (LDS-6159, Soria Series, US pressing, red/silver label, stereo, booklet included) entitled ‘The Heifetz – Piatigorsky Concerts with Primrose, Pennario, and Guests” features five chamber music masterpieces given at the Pilgrimage Theater, Hollywood, California during August 1961.
The exact contents are as follows:
Franck: Piano Qunitet in F minor
> with pianist Leonard Pennario, violinists Jascha Heifetz and Israel Baker, violist William Primrose, and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky
Brahms: Sextet No. 2 in G Major Op. 36
> with violinists Heifetz and Baker, violists Primrose and Virginia Majeuski, and cellists Piatigorsky and Gabor Rejto
Mozart: String Quintet No. 4 in G minor K. 516
> with violinists Jascha Heifetz and Israel Baker, violists William Primrose and Virginia Majewski, and cellist Gregor Piatigorsky
Schubert: String Quintet in C Major D. 956 (Op. 163)
>with violinists Heifetz and Baker, violist Primrose, and cellists Rejto and Piatigorsky
Mendelssohn: Octet for String in E-flat Major Op. 20
> with violinsts Heifetz, Baker, Arnold Belnick, and Joseph Stepansky, violists Primrose and Virginia Majewski, and cellists Rejto and Piatigorsky
A magical alchemy seemed to occur during this series, the performances boasting not only the frisson typical of any concert with Heifetz, but also a warmness and openness not always associated with the great Russian violin virtuoso. This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of chamber music making will find much to savor here.
This album was produced by Peter Delheim and engineered by David Hassinger. There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The memorable cover photo is similarly uncredited.
The accompanying booklet is as lavish as the set itself, with numerous photos from the recording sessions and rehearsals, liner notes on the composers and works, and several illustrations.
The booklet and 3 LPs are housed in an attractive and sturdy, brown inner-slipcase, which slides into the beautiful yellow outer-box. It’s sets like these that make one wish the CD had never been invented – like a beautiful first edition book, these are all 1S/1S pressings.
