If You Don’t Know Me By Now b/w Let Me Into Your World
CBS Records; S 8496, 1972.
Here’s a very scarce, original, UK demo copy of Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes sixth single release and first UK Top Ten hit – it reached number 9 in 1972. The group’s only previous UK hit had been Get Out (And Let Me Cry), which made number 35 in 1965.
As this single was a pretty big hit, standard copies are still quite easy to find. This however, is a very scarce example of a UK demonstration copy. Discogs lists only one such record for sale at the moment – and that one is in Cyprus! Although the Bluenotes recorded for Philadelphia International Records in the USA, this particular single was first issued in the UK on CBS as in this example here. UK copies on Philadelphia International are later re-issues.
I’ve had this copy of If You Don’t Know Me By Now from new. I used to help out with a mobile disco in the 1970s and sometimes got demo copies via that route. This one has quite a lot of marks but these are almost all only to the surface and primarily are the very faint marks caused by friction with the sleeve. It plays very cleanly. It is still in its original sleeve, which is a bit faded and tatty but nice to have. The labels are nice and clean apart from small grubby mark at about 2 o’clock on the B-side. I’ve included several hi-res images of the record so you can see what it is like.
