First edition, first printing with "first printing" stated on the copyright page. A handsome copy of the legendary folk music tour de force and enduring tribute to the sights and sounds of American working class radicalism. Each of the songs was collected in the field by Lomax, transcribed by Seeger from Lomax's recording, and commented on by Guthrie. Richly illustrated with photographs by Walker Evans the pages drip with moral indignation and the organic genius that have made American folk music celebrated worldwide. Repleate with such classics as "I Hate the Capitalist System," "Roll the Union On," "John Brown's Body," and lesser known tunes like "Sit Down" (written by Maurice Sugar, legal counsel for the CIO), and "The Murder of Harry Simms," an elegy for a slain National Mine Workers Union organizer. Guthrie's Oakie twang gives his commentary great verve and, as in all his other writings, makes plain his outrage over, and disgust for, our economic system.
Uncommon, my research indicates the title was published simultaneously in hardback and paperback, the hardcover issue (as one would expect) receiving a much smaller print run. Presently no copies of the first hardback printing - in or out of dust jacket - are listed in any of the major online bookselling marketplaces.
Very good in like dust jacket, book faintly rubbed along the margins with a slight spine roll, jacket moderately rubbed along the margins with a few short closed tears.
