Ignore the replacement inner-sleeve; pressing is definitely 1957-1958 (New York 23)


Condition (play-test/Goldmine) -

Record: plays VG+, quiet with minimal noise & the rare inoffensive pop
Cover: VG -- slight ring wear on cover, 1/2 inch seam splits to outside top/bottom right corners

From 1957, an outstanding and unique outing by leader, tenor and formidable composer Hank Mobley. You will not see this lineup anywhere else! Instead of the typical tenor and trumpet front line, Hank brought in the soulful yet melodically sophisticated talents of Milt Jackson and wrote the charts featuring original ensemble heads and codas with the tenor and vibes giving the front line an unusual voicing concept that works. Hank’s cerebral approach to composition was sophisticated, innovative and haunting as evidenced by the unusual structure of the beautiful and intriguing “Ultramarine” (light years removed from “Scrapple from the Apple”). As an added treat we get to hear the iconic Horace Ward Martin Tavares Silva (aka Horace Silver) whose fantastic and original comping can truly be appreciated here. During Horace’s solos his enigmatic left hand work is still unusual by any standard and totally unique to himself. Doug Watkins is always rock solid both rhythmically and soulfully harmonic while the indefatigable Buhaina stokes the fire as he is constantly “embellishing” and kicking the soloist’s butt with fills and press rolls that never stop. In short this album is UNIQUE pure HIGH ART and in this case the term “ALL STARS” is fact not hyperbole.
