Review by Psych Tripper..

Deservedly, I am generally labeled a sike aficionado... or hack by unenlightened members of my audience. However, I never object to a good progger or 'tweener. In fact, a healthy portion of my collection is comprised of numbers with strong progressive elements. Bootleg Music by H. Y. Sledge, a little known New York band, is an example.

Despite its rather lackluster title, Bootleg Music is an interesting spin which borrows from several genres. Though predominantly a progger, there are traces of R&B, a dollop of blue-eyed soul (ala the Rascals) and sike bits. Most tracks feature a nice keyboard foundation complemented by some cool guitar work. And, unlike many private press releases, the vocals are actually a plus.

Like all of the album's cuts, the opening track, Citation on Liberty, is a tight, well structured number that establishes an aura which is prevalent throughout the spin. And while not of Top 40 ilk, the plays are not without what might have been commercial or widespread appeal had the album been marketed properly.

And although the H. Y. Sledge LP definitely maintains the aforementioned and predominant atmosphere, there is also some nice variation. Such an Easy Day is a very pleasant fine-spun ballad. In stark contrast, Ride the Waves, is one of the LP's better cuts and the album's hardest rocker. However, to my ear, Cellophane Lady is clearly this spin's gem cut... dig those heavenly guitar riffs.

A Psych Tripper recommended spin, H. Y. Sledge will not be a disappointment. Bootleg Music is much more than a cool trippy sleeve; it's one of those little known obscurities that's well worth seeking out !!
