'Introduction'
"The great work of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály – A Magyar Népzene Tára (Corpus Musicae Popularis Hungaricae) – has arrived at the publication of the seventh volume. The crop of the field work continued for seven decades: a hundred thousand tunes in all, provides sufficient ground for us to believe that the series, when completed, will give a full-scale representation of the early twentieth-century Hungarian folk music (except for one or two classes of the recitative type).
Regrettably enough, the underdeveloped technique of collection in the early, classical times had failed to convey in a satisfactory way what might be termed original sounding, a feature most consistently claimed for in the recent boom of folksong movement. Actually the field work of the collectors has it as one of its main tasks to render a truest possible presentation of the highly varied tonality with which the songs are performed by the folk singers. It is precisely the tone colour that is unfortunately blurred and lost in the popular editions, owing to an inadequate practice of notation. The general spread of reading music, whose importance had been so convincingly emphasized by Kodály, is likely to involve the danger of the traditional folk music becoming discontinued, if no measures are taken in effect of passing down to posterity the genuine, authentical sounding as well. The remarkable Pátria series of records produced in the thirties had offered approach to the stylistic features in word, first of all for experts. Therefore we think the present enterprise of the Hungarian Recording Company to be of a great significance since it makes it possible for the broader public to get acquainted with the living tradition of Hungarian folk music by means of a new serial recording of discs with a concentric content. The arrangement of the material is identical for the serial sets consisting of four discs each: the first disc introduces tunes of the most ancient layer, the second those of the new style bearing traces of European influence, the third pieces of instrumental music, and the fourth presents musical performances connected with popular customs. Each set contains different types from different regions, arranged in a way that each in itself should supply a general view of Hungarian folk music as a whole. For more details concerning the particular tune-types the readers are referred to Zoltán Kodály’s A Magyar Népzene Tára.
It should be noted that the material here published throws light on the living practice of minor territorial units of the language area and certain age-groups of the nation. It is only some border areas (mainly in Transylvania and Moldavia) where unsophisticated traditional singing has remained a common property of all age-groups. In other regions, traditional performance has been restricted to an ever-narrowing scope during the last hundred years. Wedding festivals and other family feasts still offer scenes for the young to learn songs from the old in all parts of the country, even though by a decreasing rate; but nowadays people hardly sing at work, and walk, or dance. Lamenting the dead is still practiced at much more places than one would think of; and a comparatively large stock of traditional tunes has been preserved in the memory of church-goer women, too.
Owing to dissolving and uneven tradition, some of the more important tune-types, or features of performance, cannot be adequately recorded anymore; fortunately, the Patria disc provide orientation in this respect as well (informatory examples will be referred to in appropriate places in the present publication). Collection data are available in the catalogues of the Ethnomusicological Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In the present publication we had to content ourselves by inclusion of the most general information on the selected pieces.
We have a dual objective in view when publishing full texts together with the sketchy tune picture: on the one hand, we should like to facilitate listening to the piece performed; on the other hand, we should like to call into relief the difference existing between the habitual music notation and the actual sounding. This method is serviceable for those wishing to decipher the symbols of a strictly scientific notation and also allows insight into the process of free variations applied by the individual performers.
For technical limitations, the phonetic presentation of the words and dialectal features has been reduced to very narrow confines here. The English translation has been aimed at a literal interpretation of the original meaning of the words.
Having in mind Kodály’s instructions he gave us for the arrangement of the first set of discs, we try our best to realize his intentions in respect of the present set as well, although we sorely lack his active participation and helpful criticism."
