Brief Info: The seventh Humble Pie album, named after an old English word for toilet. This album was manufactured in the United States where it sold fairly well. These were imported for the British market. The album itself is famed for it’s somewhat risqué cover – a gimmick format with a cheeky die-cut keyhold front cover with the inner sleeve showing a girl on a toilet. The inner’s other side shows two undressed women, the most revealing I have covered up for this listing. This a very fine, hardly played copy with an equally impressive cover. A very clean looking and sounding record, both inner and cover show little wear. This is one of the most elusive Humble Pie albums with many seen in very poor condition, as the cover has a tendency for wear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces design by Hipgnosis. The front has a keyhole die-cut shaped window shape as seen in close-up. Printed and made in the US. Includes the double-sided graphic inner with it’s somewhat daring artwork.

Cover Front: Very little real wear with just a few quite light creases that have very modest visibility. Still clean, fresh with the die-cut window itself being pristine. The lack of rubbing on such a cover is a noteworthy plus. The very edge of the spine edge has faded due to natural light exposure.

Cover Back: Superb with barely any wear, any rub traces minimal, few and faint.

Top Edge: Straight with minimal rubbing and just the odd tiny surface chip or two.

Bottom Edge: Very light and equally patchy rub traces.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring only little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: . Solid, straight with minimal compression. Little real wear as such but this has naturally faded with light exposure. Some covers are more prone to this than others, this clearly is very prone. However the text is still present and still quite easy to read.

Corners: Light tip rubs with the odd small crease, very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive gimmick cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): with only fine and light edge rubs but no splits or weakening at all. Decided best not to show one side in it’s entirety due to Ebay policy. Arguably a little distasteful and a little daring. This is solid with no edge splits or creasing with a crisp neat top opening.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few and mainly light. Purely superficial minor surface scuffs from the harsh card inner, a record that seldom will avoid this with US record seemingly more suspectible to this. A record that offers very fine clean sound. Visually a super example that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quite elusive Humble Pie album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
