Label Conditions: All four very clean, fresh and attractive. One spindle mark on side four, any others are tiny, very few and faint as seen under angled light. This superb set appears hardly even played.

Cat Number: AMLS 6004.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 155 / 141 grams. Both heavy and above average as the earliest A&M pressings were.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Rarer as an original. As seen on my pictures, both records are pressed on red translucent vinyl. The word translucent means light will pass through the object, but is not clear. Viewed normally, these records appear normal and black. But when bright light is placed behind the records, they both glow an eerie red. Only early copies of this set were made on translucent vinyl, and these were better pressed as the vinyl is more pure. Both these records play superbly with little unwanted. Also mention of the cover: this includes the original 20-page full colour book, still very solidly attached to the centrefold. Most seen have no book or it has been pulled out and damaged. This one fully intact even with the two original staples rock solid and untarnished. Also, both mirror-image inner sleeves are included. This very first issue is never easy to find like this.

Brief Info: The seventh Humble Pie album, a double set with all four sides very different. It features the use of backing vocalists with an overall emphasis on RnB and rock tinged heavily with blues and soul. Some consider it their stronest ever album with powerful performances from the band and Marriott in particular. This is a superb first issue with the attached book and heavier pressed translucent red records (more explanation given on these in the rarity paragraph above). Superbly produced and pressed – not all A&M records were at this time, but this translucent pair made with very pure vinyl sound magnificent and appear hardly played. Never easily found like this and the first copy I have seen as such with all the pieces intact and strong.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: even with a bit of fairly light ring wear, I think is overall is a little undergraded as such. Highly prone to all forms of wear and damage. This is one that tends to show a green hue when rubbed and so few will ever escape it with two thick original records inside for 40 years. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. The inside has a 20-page full colour book that is double stapled into the thick spine, with also two further staples (so four in total) to hold the pages together. Rarely seen this solidly intact, this was never glued, only stapled and most are missing or detached these days. Printed and made in England and includes the A&M promotional inner sleeves.

Cover Front: The intensely coloured front has some reasonly light ring wear (rim rubbing) but little else really. The lack of creasing and grubbiness major pluses and barely any of these will escape some rim wear due to the thinness of the card, deep colour and thick original records. Most double-set gatefolds are prone, this probably more so. So I consider this a very fine front overall, and with no price sticker issues of which this is highly intolerant.

Cover Back: The back is nigh-on identical and again looks strong with the same level of ring wear.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside covers are very impressive with little wear at all.

The Gatefold Book: MINT(-): and not even sure where the minus really is. This is a superb 20-page book with all pages in colour and printed on quality paper. Two central staples hold the pages together, then two more are punched into the spine to hold the book on to the main cover. All are as solid as when made, hence a much rarer example with a very solid book still strong attached. Superb artwork and band pictures and this fragile part of the set will rarely be seen better with no creasing, grubbiness, tears or marks – simply gorgeous as I hope my selective pictures show.

Top Edges: Any rubbing up to the corner tips are very few, small and light, both straight.

Bottom Edges: Light to less than moderate, patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with a little burring or thickening seen viewed end-on, both are guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine: very solid, thick straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is near perfect and unworn and both the book retention staples solid and unloosened or tarnished.

Corners: The corners have light+ to moderate tip rubs with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very wear-prone 70’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. A little wear yes, few will not have, but there are far more positives than negatives with this one – the superb book being the star attraction. This solidily attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: Both EXCELLENT: with just a little mild darkening mostly around the edges. This pair advertise A&M full-price and the more budget Mayfair subsidiary label albums. These were not lined, have hardly any creasing and no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) to EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. These early translucent pressings are collectable, original and sort-after. Any surface traces minimal and faint even viewed under bright angled light. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually super records that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these excellent red translucent records. This set will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
