Some Wolfaholics consider everything the massive man touched golden. But while his voice was a bass instrument in its own right---part blues bugle, part Tuvan throat rumble---I'm a bit more selective in my Wolf love. His epic groaning pipes are undeniable no matter what he's bellowing, but there are pretty frequent blues-by-numbers entries across his discography.
And there's a huge difference between Moanin' and it's rightfully adored follow-up, the self-titled Rocking Chair Album. On Chair, virtually every song was written by Willie Dixon, and while the Dixon songs "Spoonful," "Back Door Man" et al are ironclad blues classics in their own right, dripping with raunchy libidinal innuendo and some of the swampiest Chicago ghetto attitude ever forced to sit still for historical retention, they're still anchored by the genre.
Moanin' is a differently DNA'd beast, unshackled by genre. All of the songs on this sonic immensity are Howlin' Wolf originals, formally glued to the blues, yet uniquely twisted. The conspiracy-theory, street corner poet lyrics, gravel pit voice, McCarthy-era smokey Chicago club pioneering electric guitar riffs, and the crude cover drawing of a wolf howling at the hills on a moonlit night blend into one of the ultimate North American cultural statements.
These dark 1950s scrapyard poesies of creeping unease anticipate '60s rock sensibilities, diverging from the more standard blues writing of fellow legends Waters/Hooker/Hopkins, etc. They're shrouded in lurking shadows rather than saucy raunch or hardluck musings. On "Moanin' at Midnight," you don't know who's knockin' on his door, or who's trying to call him on that intrusive telephone; on "How Many More Years," he wonders how much longer you're going to be "dogging" him, with no clarity about who you are or why you're so intent on bugging him; on "Evil"...well, there's some "evil goin' on," and "Somebody in My Home" alludes to the looming specter of yet more outside intrusions to be frantically fended off with a a canine howl.

What can we say? The single most important modern blues album EVER (we honestly believe that nothing and no one comes even close) and a true classic of the genre. No collection – let alone BLUES collection – should be without this masterwork.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 2.1/2 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.
(d) True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant).
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
- Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity. (nothing significant)
- Cover has some writing on its back side (name of the previous owner written in thin black marker, about 1 x 1/8 inch in size)
- Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease) in one of the corners. (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)
- Cover has one corner slightly worn (nothing significant)
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No stamps
- No peel-off marks
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
