Here's an interesting and rare record for collectors of Folk and Byrds-related items. This is a collection of folk & bluegrass tracks by a variety of groups, mostly from LA and San Diego in the early 60's... I couldn't find any information on some of them, but a couple caught my eye...
The Scottsville Squirrel Barkers were Chris Hillman's (later of the Byrds & Flying Burrito Bros.) first group. The story is recounted on his website:
"Hillman's prowess on guitar and mandolin became well-known in San Diego's Folk Music community. The proprietors of the Blue Guitar shop, Larry Murray and Ed Douglass invited Hillman to join their band, the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers.
The Barkers, which lasted two years and recorded but one album, nonetheless earned a well-deserved legendary reputation thanks to the skills and talents of its members. This was a band from whose ranks spawned one future Byrd, (Hillman) two Hearts and Flowers, ( Larry Murray and Bernie Leadon) three Flying Burrito Brothers,(Hillman, Leadon, and Kenny Wertz), one Country Gazette, (Wertz) and one future Eagle (Leadon).
Larry Murray chuckles as he remembered playing alongside the shy teenager:
"Even at his age Chris was such a solid musician and a die-hard perfectionist. He was always determined to do things right!"
Also included on the LP are the Hootenairs, which included Mason Williams, the virtuoso later known for "Classical Gas". As the record is still totally sealed, it's unclear which songs are performed by which artists, but here's the info from the record sleeve:
Groups: Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, Phil Campos and Paul Hansen, The Hootenairs, Paul Sykes, The Silvergate Singers and Billy Sherman.
Songs: Paul and Silas, The Prison Song, Golden Vanity, The Willow Tree, Whoa Mule, Goodnight Irene, Wayfaring Stranger, John Hardy, Wade in the Water and Three Finger Breakdown.
There are no other copies of this record sealed available on the Internet (and very few available even OPEN!) Don't pass up your chance to own a PERFECT copy of this rare artifact!
