Brief Info: A more obscure, but highly regarded folk-rock act of the early 1970s, they made just two albums – both on Dawn, and both fared badly in terms of sales, neither seen or offered often. After the failure of the debut self-titled album, they issued this double set for the price of a single album – hence the title. Even with the bargain price, this largely went unnoticed. The band had a dislike of the studio, they recorded their music outside which gives their sound a very natural ambience and tone. Sometime of a folk collector’s piece, what sets any copy aside bar condition – and this appears hardly even played – is the inclusion of quite a spectacular large post card insert. The sheer difference in the price guides with and without it is vast, which in a strong indicator just how rare this insert is. This copy includes it, and it is in Mint condition. Another huge factor is the pressing quality, which collectors will know can vary considerably on these lesser-made Pye off-shoots on Dawn. This is superb and plays with hardly anything unwanted across four quite long sides. The cover is flimsy and under-strength as well. A single sleeve storage two records, a sure-fire recipe for ringwear and damage which again this has largely avoided. So a great all-round, totally complete example of a rare, seldom-seen double set. Finding it better will prove beyond difficult, indeed this is my first ever copy to offer.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably under-graded as such. A quite unusual single format housing two records. The front is laminated, this covers all closed folds. The single opening edge is above the word ‘HERON’ on the front. The back is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the two polylined white inner sleeves. And very importantly, the original – it IS guaranteed original – the large double-sided post card.

Lamination & Front: Very impressive with clear, shiny fresh laminate with no lifting and minimal traces of creasing. Few marks and any dulling gentle and faint as seen under light, with two records inside against each other, this has fared very well in this respect. In fact there is little to really fault bar traces of burring on the opening edge that few can hope to avoid as a bare minimum. This lovely rural scene cover looks fantastic.

Cover Back: Again impressive for a non-laminated side. Gentle rim impression near the opening edge with a trace of grubbiness near the pale near it. But barely any ink erosion, so this has barely progressed to ringwear as such and few of these will be seen better. Most of any light creasing near the same area, obviously record removal around this fragile part will also be hard to avoid, but only light evidence along with the minor edge burring as per the front.

Top Edge: As viewed with the opening on the right side and the picture tilted 90 degree clockwise. A closed edge with the fold laminated. Still straight with minimal hint of any wear.

Bottom Edge: As above with minor loss of shape due to holding the weight downwards of two records.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with a little wear with mildish thickening or burring as mentioned already. Record enters on this very vulnerable edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, smooth and straight with minimal compression. The which area on the bottom is correct as made, it has NOT rubbed and is still fully laminated. All text is perfect and unworn and impressively well-centred for maximum neatness.

Corners: The odd small tip rub but no knocks or dinks, so very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: Probably due to cost, a gatefold cover was not issued for a predictable low-selling album. This is under-strength and few will survive a great deal better I feel sure. A strong all-round example of this rarely seen early 1970’s Dawn cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Attractive and still fresh, it should please many if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: although the orange label had now been replaced by the purple Dawn labels, Pye records still for a while used the heavy-duty polylined inners. These both originals and a mirror-image pair. Both UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Four crisp window circles and the linings clear and barely even crinkled. The inners are both a little aged with the usual darkening of the seam edge adhesive in particular and one has some creasing. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Post Card Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: a superb full colour post card with another lovely rural picture of the main four band members. The other side like a post card with a printed fake stamp on the top right corner. This, as seen as the song titles (as the main cover does not) and the timings and band details etc. This is uncreased (well a smaller than microscopic tip crease trace going beyond critical – get out the magnifying glass), clean and fresh with crisp unthickened or burred edges, also 100% genuine and very rare indeed. With so little information on the cover, this insert is crucial and rarely will it ever be found better. It measures up at 6.5 x 10 inches, so quite large and beautifully impressive.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): or better. A super visual copy that are very clean with equally fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. The odd fine hairline on a couple of sides or wispy surface traces, few will ever be seen or heard better. Visually two age-defying Dawn records and barely even run-in in vinyl terms that should please many, if not most collectors. Indeed this pair could prove a substantial upgrade for any even lucky enough to own a copy.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality folk double set play even above their high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Dawn could be variable – this pair are beautifully pressed with no inherent pressing noises or invisbile issues. Few copies match or outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure – but I doubt if this album was pressed more than once or twice anyway. A largely ‘lost’ gem and hugely collectable, especially with the post card. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful set. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
