 Hawkwind are an English progressive/psychedelic rock band, one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. Formed in November 1969, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and styles of music. One constant factor has been Dave Brock. Dozens of musicians, dancers and writers have worked with the group since their inception. Notable ex members include: Lemmy (Kilmister) and Simon House. Hawkwind are famed for their fantastic impromptu live performances. This double album gives a fantastic representation of a live experience back in the day!!

  This is an original first issue double album set from Hawkwind and comes in a foldout, Poster style, card sleeve and includes original the original orange/yellow inner sleeves that are mostly missing in above average condition.





Recorded live in December 1972 and released the following year, Space Ritual is an excellent document of Hawkwind's classic lineup, underscoring the group's status as space rock pioneers. As the quintessential "people's band," Hawkwind carried '60s countercultural idealism into the '70s, gigging constantly, playing wherever there was an audience, and even playing for free on five consecutive days outside the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The band's multimedia performances were the perfect accompaniment for exploring inner space and imagining outer space. While not concerned with rock's material trappings, Hawkwind were, ironically, among the hardest-working groups in Britain, averaging one show every three days during the year preceding these recordings. Given all that practice, it's not surprising that the performances collected here are incredibly tight (although, reportedly, a couple of tracks were edited). Incorporating most of Doremi Fasol Latido, the show for the Space Ritual tour was conceived as a space rock opera, its blend of sci-fi electronics, mesmerizing psy-fi grooves, and heavy, earthbound jamming punctuated with spoken word interludes from astral poet Bob Calvert. Although his intergalactic musings date the album, coming across now as camp futurism, they still provide fitting atmospheric preambles to Hawkwind's astounding, mind-warping sounds. Calvert's manic recital ofMichael Moorcock's "Sonic Attack," for instance, is an exercise in tension that subsequently explodes on the stomping "Time We Left This World Today"; with Nik Turner's otherworldly sax, Dave Brock's guitar distortion, and the earth-moving rhythm section of Simon King and Lemmy, this track offers a blueprint for the album's most potent material. Another standout is "Orgone Accumulator," ten minutes of hypnotic (Wilhelm) Reich & roll that could be the missing link between Booker T. and Stereolab. A 1973 advertisement described Space Ritual as "88 minutes of brain damage"; that characterization still holds true.

 

 

 

I have played this in FULL>  There are not any jumps, pops or skips although all sides do have hairlines.  There is an amount of background noise in places but mostly not audible as it is masked by the powerful audio. Very remarkable for this 1973 vinyl!!!  I played this on my Technics turntable with a Linn cartridge and through my very revealing B&W three way speakers!!! A beautiful CLASSIC with supreme songcraft, a joy to listen to!!!!

!!!!A VERY HARD FIND!!! Most have been bought up by collectors!! This is hardly offered these days!!

 

                       

Vinyls: VG to VG+ .  A sensational find!!! I have played this in FULL twice over> The replay is still great even though each sidehas a number of hairlines!!! I first played for a general listen and a second time for a more detailed observation.  Fantastic songcraft and a joy to listen to!! A personal favourite of mine and I am very glad to be able to report that this is a fine slab of vinyl without any major problems at all and as such worthy of inclusion of a prog collection. 

Outstanding audio delivery in all respects with a crystal clear, deep, rich, warm and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one) there is an amount surface noise in places but never intrusive and mostly masked by the powerful recording. This is a beautifully clean pressing (and I must emphasise again how difficult it is to find a copy which plays this well).    Of course, NO skips, NO jumps.



Gimmix Poster Sleeve: VG+.  A beautiful six panel poster style sleeve with moderate storage wear mainly on the corners (see pics please). This sleeve is impossible to find in EX or above state as it is so very vulnerable esp. being matt. This is probably one of the better ones I have ever come across for this sleeve.  The colours are outstandingly beautiful. The pictures say all. Light storage wear on the edges. No creases.
