Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture & Rarity: The record was manufactured in Germany for the UK market. Some UK pressings are available as well but these are usually thinner pressed and usually seen inside the matt covers. It was not unusual for UA albums to be manufactured in Germany at this time. The labels are just the same but have a black overprint on the ‘manufactured in England’ on the rims and ‘Manufactured in Germany’ added. This still has the UK Cat. No. and UK-style matrix numbers, more detail on that below. The original copies of this album had a very shiny real silver looking cover, this was replaced by a matt version which is far more common. Also with an inner and the elusive poster which is now quite rare and sort-after. Complete examples of this classic Hawkwind album are hard to find especially with the cover, inner and poster in superb condition.

Brief Info: Hawkind’s third album and more brilliant space-rock again featuring the heavy bass chords of Lemmy. A no-nonsense full-on acid rock classic and one of my favourite ‘Hawks’ albums ever. This German pressing sounds incredible with power and dynamics I hardly thought possible - it makes the UK pressing sound muted in comparison. I had the chance to crank this up today and the sound totally blew me away. This record has marks, mostly paper scuffs but they are all ignored totally and this record plays superbly. The immense power and intensity of Lemmy’s bass on ‘Time We Left This World Today’ has to be heard to be believed. This band were never quite the same after his departure. Play this album as loud as possible to set the controls for the next dimension in entertainment.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High. This has the original silver foil shiny cover that may have been a specialised printing job and thus the German manufacture, although the cover itself has no imprint or country of manufacture. Later examples with the more basic matt cover are more easily found and are more durable. This rarer original is highly prone to ringwear, rubbing and most of all, tarnishing and dulling to the silver areas, few ever avoid it and although this one has a little of all the aforementioned, it’s still an exceptional one and it still looks attractive and shiny.

Cover Grade and Format: EX a single, unlaminated format with the real silver look finish with shiny surface. There are no printing credits but DA/DA/72 is printed on the bottom right corner of the back.

Cover Front: Looking much different to the Garrod & Lofthouse version, both sides have the silver foil shiny surfaces on the non-black areas. The silver artwork and text on the front is superb and still shines with no rubbing, damage or tarnishing. Very unusual to say the least. There is mild traces of rubbing on the black areas and a ring arc near the top, few ever avoid it. The cover was printed in silver and black overprinted. This is definitely the case as any chips or rubs that occur that remove the black has silver below and traces of this appears on the lightly rubbed bottom edge. Glad to state barely any chipping traces on the front at all or few creases either. All considered this fragile and delicate front looks lovely.

Cover Back: The back is exceptional and has only light rubbing/dull near the top round the inside flipback area. Most all of the silver areas retain immense shine and freshness and has avoided tarnish and ringwear. Hardly a crease to be seen and any marks are few and fine. This will take a huge amount of beating overall.

Top & Bottom Edges: Faint rub traces top. The bottom has mild rubbing exposing some faint traces of silver.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is incredible fragile and few will survive much better than this. Solid, straight with minimal compression, all the silver text is perfect and unworn. Can hardly believe this myself, every figure and letter is pristine with great shine and clarity. Any rubbing or chipping to the black ink is microscopic.

Corners: All four as practically as made with any tip rubs tiny and faint. All retain superb shape too.

Cover Summary: An immensely wear-prone cover, this example totally defies its vulnerability and will prove difficult to find better. This superb item should please most realistic collectors.

The Inner: Practically Mint as made and never seen a better example and probably never will again. This has the shaped corners and flipback construction. Unlined with no edge splits or repairs. Ultra clean, no marks or creases with a perfect recessed opening – anyone needing an inner upgrade need not look any further.

The Poster: Mint(-), the minus being a couple of faint and small tone spots on the white back. This scarce poster is unmounted e.g. no pin-holes, cellotape or blu-tack marks, and looks fantastic. No splits, tears or creasing, all the folds are as strong as when made and I doubt if this one has hardly ever been unfolded or even seen light-of-day. Again a near unbeatable upgrade example, do not underestimate the scarcity of a complete copy of this album.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: For looks, I have to grade EX(-) because it has several paper marks or surface scuffs. These have NO sound whatsoever and this record plays a full grade above its visual grading. Slightly strange this, the last four copies of this album I have seen have all had surface marks and scuffs, this absolutely true. Still a fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. The label visuals in terms of spindle marks indicates hardly played and how these scuffs occurred, well not sure because the rest of the set is superb. Still the marks don’t sound and the record plays with fantastic sound. Visually a decent record that should please manycollectors but not the perfectionists of course.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This German-pressed record plays a full grade above its visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high, literally as good as it ever gets. A title best enjoyed at volume and this super-clean example allows just that. Minimal surface sound, even on the few quiet passages and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The marks are purely lie on the surface and have no relevance to sound or audio quality. I truthfully swear this record has more detail and better dynamics than any UK pressing I have heard. Not an audiophile masterpiece, I am not saying that, but the early Hawkwind albums have a reputation for slightly muted sound. But this was an eye and ear opener, this does sound more detailed and open and the instruments sharper with better sonic values. My LP12 will bring out the finer details but only if they are present to be bought out in the first place. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and it would not surprise me at all if some of these scuffs were present from purchase day. Of course I cannot prove this but the fact I have seen similar marks on other examples is baffling. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better for quality sound and on that basis can be warmly recommended. If the record’s marks are an issue or you feel unsure, please do not bid.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
