Description

INDIAN HIPPIE OST: HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA – R.D. BURMAN, Beat instro, moog, hammond

Original ODEON Print.

Record No : BOE.2313

This is a rare SP (Will come with the SP cover as shown in the picture and not with the yellow cover)

This is the original soundtrack for "Hare Rama hare Krishna" from 1971 by the great film composer R.D. Burman. The film deals with the abuse of Indian girls by crazy drug induced hippies in India. It’s India’s answer to the western exploitation of India’s so called spiritualism. The film is full of caricatures of hippies who are smoking their heads off and who are corrupting the country. The film created a huge fuzz in India around the Hare Krishna movement which was indeed involved in drugs smuggle. It even caused the movement to partly collapse!

The music is Amazing. To begin with, there’s the superhit discotheque hit "Dum Maro Dum" ("Take another hale"!!), with a vicious sixties beat and psychedelic moog and sitar work. The refrain and synth imitate the effect that a hit of a splif has. The chorus imitating hippies singing "Hare Krishna Hare Rama" is lurid! This was a major hit throughout the world in 1971, because it hits exactly the right chord for psychedelic pleasure and dancing.

Remakable: on the Record is the great duet between USHA IYER(UTHUP) and ASHA BOSHLE: "I love You"  with infectious rhythms & James Bond Intro and franticly speeding up towards the end ("Can we go a little bit faster, man!") and another heavy percussion instrumental which sounds like good exotica!

Hare Rama Hare Krishna is the quintessential Bollywood film to deal with hippies invasion of India and none other than RD Burman could have scored a better soundtrack for this. Besides being a very nice and fun movie to watch, the film takes a somewhat critical stance on this "invasion" claiming that hippies actually did not have a sincere interest in the deeper side of the Hindu or Buddhist cultures and in the movie they were shown as drug-disillusioned, degenerated long hairs who were too naive to reach their actual aim. Not far from the truth actually, besides what's also interesting is that the original Indian perception of hippies was somewhat of a "South Park" attitude some 35 years ago!!

This is the actual classic soundtrack for this legendary Dev Anand film. Features amazing cool heavy organ/guitar work and funky upbeat RD Burman psych!! Hear samples if you haven't heard this album of 'beg-borrow-or-steal' essentiality!!
