The unusual power duo of keyboardist/vocalist Eddie Hardin and drummer Pete York made a few albums in the late '60s and early '70s, and were aptly described as a cross between Traffic and Procol Harum. They leaned closer to Traffic than Procol Harum, with their blend of hard rock, soul, progressive, and jazz influences; the swirl and swell of Hardin's Hammond organ; and Hardin's Stevie Winwood-esque vocals. And they came by that Traffic influence honestly: York had played alongside Winwood in the Spencer Davis Group before Winwood formed Traffic, and Hardin joined the Spencer Davis Group on keyboards and vocals after Winwood's departure. 

Both Hardin and York left the Winwood-less Spencer Davis Group in October 1968, and teamed up shortly afterward to form a two-man group, with Hardin on vocals and Hammond C3 organ, and York on drums. The two-man band is unusual in rock to this day, and as far as two-person organ-drum combos go, the only other one of note from that period was used by Lee Michaels, the keyboardist who sometimes performed and recorded only using drummer Frosty for accompaniment. (A much more obscure one, Hanson & Karisson, were also active in Sweden around this time.) Hardin covered the bass parts with the left hand of his organ, and the result was actually a pretty full band sound for just the two members. However, on their three albums, the duo was sometimes augmented by horns, flute, guitar, backup female vocals, and other orchestration. 

Although Hardin & York weren't that big in the U.K. or U.S., they had more success on the European Continent, particularly in Germany, where they were big both on record and as a touring act. In fact, they were the last band to play the famous Star Club in Hamburg in 1970 before it closed and were popular enough to be honored by a bootleg recorded in Germany in the early '70s. In 1971 each member started playing with their own bands as well (the Pete York Percussion Band and Hardin/Fenwick/Newman), occasionally playing in those bands on the same bill as live Hardin & York concerts. 

Hardin & York's third and final album, For the World (1971), put a greater emphasis on orchestration and slower tracks. One of the session musicians on that record, guitarist Ray Fenwick (who had also played with the Spencer Davis Group in the late '60s), joined Hardin & York in mid-1972, at which point the act's name changed to Hardin, York & Fenwick. In mid-1973, Hardin & York, or Hardin, York & Fenwick if you prefer, disbanded when Hardin and York joined a reunited version of the Spencer Davis Group. Vinyl Grade

MINT (M): Perfect : Looks unhandled as if it has just left the manufacturer, with NO flaws. No scuffs or scratches, blotches or stains. We believe few, if any, second-hand records can be like this so we do not use this grade on used records.

NEAR MINT (NM or M-) : Appears virtually flawless , very minor scuffs and very little else can appear on the vinyl. It should play without any noise over the flaw. The flaw is very hard to see. Labels will have no writing or tears and have no more than a few light spindle marks. This is normally the highest grade we use.

EXCELLENT (EX) : Shows no more than a couple of minor scuffs or hairlines which are only slightly visible. It should play without any noise over the flaw and there will be minimal lessening in sound quality compared to a new record. Labels will have no writing or tears and may have a few spindle marks.

NEAR EXCELLENT (VG++): Shows a few visible light scuffs or hairlines. Nothing feelable and no obvious noise over any flaws. No skips or jumps. Possibly some faint background noise audible in run in and between tracks otherwise nothing to lessen the enjoyment. Labels will be clean and fresh and may have a moderate spindle markings. Any obvious flaws will be mentioned.

VERY GOOD+ (VG+): Shows more scuffs or hairlines. Nothing feelable but there may be some minor noise over the flaw and some faint background noise in quieter passages and between tracks. No skips or jumps unless stated. Still very enjoyable with no major flaws. Labels will be clean and fresh and show more wear. Any obvious flaws will be mentioned.

VERY GOOD (VG) : Record shows wear, surface scuffs. The vinyl still has a great sheen, but the flaws will be noticeable to the naked eye. There may be a couple of feelable light scratches, which may cause some surface noise but will play through without skips, jumps or significant pops or clicks and the music will predominate and still be enjoyable to most fans of the music. Other light surface noise may be present. If so it will be mentioned. A VG grade does not denote a trashed record. We rarely list items of lower grade than this and where we do, we describe any issues fully.

Sleeve Grade

MINT COVER:  No stickers address labels, writing on the covers or labels. No tears or seam splits. No wear to the cover. Age of the record has nothing to do with it.

NEAR MINT:  The cover looks as close to perfect with only minor signs of wear and or age.

EXCELLENT:  Artwork is still as close to perfect as can be. Some impression to the cover (perhaps very minor outer ring wear) but no ink wear! Some slight creases to the corners, but not wrinkled or displeasing to the eye.

VERY GOOD (VG): The artwork looks clean with slightly more aging. The back of the cover usually gives away the age of the cover. Flat white paper might be yellowing with no major staining. Some minor wear to the seams or spine, but no tears or splits unless mentioned.

A plus (+) or (-) following the condition indicate variations of the condition i.e. VG+ is in slightly better condition than VG but not excellent, VG++ will be near excellent. Any obvious sticker tearing or residue will be mentioned. Inserts, where present, will be similar to sleeve grading except where mentioned.
